Could the name Fletcher be derived over time from Fleissner ? Before and
even some time after the middle of the 19th century most spelling of
surnames in the U.S. was phonetic -- spelled as they sounded to the one
recording them. Moreover, not all of the enumerators and court scribes were
native-born Americans and their spellings would differ. Actually there are
no "correct" spellings for surnames. They can be spelled however you choose
and you will find them spelled all sorts of ways in the records. There may
be hundreds of variant ways to spell a particular name. See why: "It's So
Hard Find our Ancestors."
Best ever,
Kate Cain Rigsby Bynum

I have a "James E. Cain" born in Virginia 1844. His father was "Walter
Cain" born 1810 also in Virginia. Mother is Sarah Hays born 1817 in
Virginia. could this possible be your line? hope so.
