I am looking for a CAIN family in the west LA, east TX area with possible
Alabama Coushatta (Koasati) or other Native American or Redbone connections.
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Cain b. 15 Nov 1878 Newton Co., TX, d. 28 Feb 1927
Lufkin, Angelina Co., TX, m. 20 Oct 1895 Angelina Co., TX to William Charles
Evans. Her parents were Patrick Cain and Rosanna Wilkinson b. 1844, d. 1918.
She had a brother named Will and a sister Laurinda Jane Cain (m. J.A. Beasley)
b. 10 Nov 1875, d. Jan 1980.
The 1860 TX census INDEX has Patrick, William, and Abel Cain in Polk Co.,
Smithfield P.O., also in Polk Co. at Livingston P.O. are David, J.P., James,
Jesse, and Mary Ann Wilkinson. Does anyone have any info on these folks and
how they are connected? If I remember correctly the Alabama Coushatta
Reservation is near Livingston.
Thanks,
Mary Lyn

Mary Lyn, I can't help you much, but I will give you the information I
have
regarding your posting to the Cain List.
The (1) Emily Cain who married Solomon Cole, (2) William Cain who married
Rebecca Chaddick, (3) Mary Jane Cain who married Benjamin Franklin Miller,
and (4) Jonathan James Cain who married Mary Jane Craft are all children of
Jonathan Day Cain & Mary Ann Harp. They lived just (eastward from Newton
County, TX) across the Sabine River in what is now Vernon Parish, LA (which
was formed in 1871). It was much closer to go to Newton, TX (the nearest
county seat) for a marriage license than to go to Alexandria, LA, the seat
of the government of Rapides Parish.
I am almost sure the Cains named above are not relatives of the East Texas
family you are researching. If they are, the relationship is so remote it
is not known. The Jonathan Cain family came to Rapides (Vernon) Parish
about 1851-1852, after leaving northern MS.
Sincerely, Tom Cain
