JOHN MANNING CAIN (12/5/1779 near Richmond, VA-2/8/1875 Buford) m #1
1804 Pendleton, SC, Harriet Melissa Prickett b.1807; m #2 in 1825 Edna
Pool (July 1783 Pendleton, SC-8/26/1856 Buford). They moved to Gwinnett
c1831. Both are bur. Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Highway 124, Hog
Mountain. The following was extracted from a letter written by his great-
granddaughter, ELIZABETH M. (CAIN) Jackson Hamilton:
"JOHN CAIN SR. was born 1779 in Rutherford County, North Carolina and
moved with his parents to Virginia in 1781 and after ten years moved to
Greenville, South Carolina in 1803. He there married in 1804 Miss
Prichard (Prickett). They had five sons and one daughter. His first
wife died in 1825. His second marriage was with Miss Edna Pool. They
had one son. In 1855, his last wife died and left him alone. He came to
Georgia in 1828, lived in Hall County three years; in 1831 went to
Gwinnett and in 1841 he joined the Baptist Church. He died of no disease
but worn by the friction of accumulated years the wheel of life stood
still, giving his own emphatic language. "I am going to that happy,
happy world."

VII. Manning Cain (b5/6/1826)
In 1790 Virginia there were two James Cains and two John Cains. The 1800
federal census shows one James and two John Cains in SC, one of whom
could be John Manning, in York Co. Another John in Laurens District
could be his father. There are none shown in Anderson Co. where he is
supposed to have been in 1803. However, in the 1830 Census John Cain was
in Gwinnett with wife, five sons and one daughter.
The 1850 Census shows John Cain, age 70, with wife Edna, 60, as a
farmer with real estate valued at $1200. In the 1860 Census, John Cain
80, was a boarder with the John W. Fagle family, owned real estate valued
at $1000, and $3,365 in personal property.
John Manning Cain lived to the age of 97, when, according to a
newspaper account, he and his sons were cutting trees in Feb 1876 and a
tree fell on him, mortally wounding him. As his sons prepared to take
him to a doctor, he asked them to take him home instead, for he wanted to
die there. Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he is buried is doubtless
the "Baptist" church that he joined in 1841.
John Cain and son, William Anderson, were on a committee at Mt. Moriah
to lay off the campground in Aug. 1846.
James J. ("Uncle Jimmy") Cain (above) m 1/15/1829 Esther (Hetty)

in 1870 and his estate was not settled until 12/1/1874. His land was
deeded to Adam R. and recorded3/12/1872. James Cain also deeded
11/13/1866 to his grandchildren, Elizabeth, George, Mary, Sarah, and
Alice, 45 acres in Gwinnett. Children as listed in 1850 Census, 1860
Census were:
A. Clinton McDill Cain b1832 SC m 3/19/1852, Mary Avaline House. Clinton

Thanks for responding to my message 80 dated 6OCT95 and for checking
your records. It appears we can not establish a connection between our
John Cain ancestors, even though our lines appear full of names John &
William. I want to collect clues that might help identify John Manning
Cain's parents, particularily Cain relationships before 1800.
I would like to see the relationships of your oldest known family.
Attachment 1 is the relationships for my oldest family, the family of
John Manning Cain. My grandfather told me that my Cain's came from
Wales. The history books show a large migration of Quakers from Wales
during the late 1600's.
Your message mentions interest in the line:
William Cain
John Cain
Hugh Cain ( - 1781 Orange Co NC)
William Cain (d 1781 ditto)
John Cain (1770-1851 MS)
Jane Cain (1792 MS - 1856 TX).
It appears that your record matches the record e-mailed from John E.
Cain - see Attachment 3. Attachment 2 is some info from my miscellaneous
file on names that you mentioned. I'll try to keep you advised of an new
discoveries I make.
