I am interested in the family of Thomas Cain who was born in 1844 in Ireland,
possibly Dublin, and came to America in 1848. In the 1850 census of Scott
County, Indiana, his family is listed as follows:
Michael Cain 52 M RR Laborer
Catharine Cain 45 F
Elizabeth 11 F
Patrick 14 M
James 8 M
Thomas 6 M
Lavina 6/12 F
In the 1860 Bartholomew Co., Indiana Census they are listed as follows:
Mary Cain 48 F
Patrick 22 M
Elizabeth 18 F
James 15 M
Thomas 14 M
Mana (Maria?) 9 F
Michael 7 M
I know Thomas (my gr-gr-grandfather) came from Bartholomew County so this
census is probably his family. Is the family listed in Scott County in 1850
the same family? As you can see, the mother's name is different and some of
the children's names and ages are also different from one census to another.
Of course, we all know the tendency for errors in census records, but how do
I determine if they're the same family? I have been told that his father
died sometime before 1860, so the Michael listed in 1850 could be his father.
I've checked on several Michael Cains that came here from Ireland around
1848, but have not been able to determine which if any of them are my
ancestor. Can anyone out there help?
By the way, Thomas died in Burlingame, Osage Co., KS on 2-22-1912 but it does
not appear that the rest of his family followed him. I've been told that his
brothers Patrick and Michael lived in Nebraska and Texas and that his sisters
lived in Iowa. One of them married a Mr. Conley and another a Mr. Conner or
O'Conner.
Thanks for any help.
