There seems to be some conflicting information. How could John Cain be the father of
James if they were born 6 years apart (John in 1773 and James in 1779)?
Also, Diana has stated that Mathias died in the Civil War but also stated that he married
Martha in 1868, the widow of his brother William who was also killed in the war. The war
ended in 1865, and many of my ancestors and others were banished from Missouri and left
for Oregon in April 1865.
It could not have been Tice Cain's son, also named Mathias "Tice" Cain, who
was killed in the war. He went to Oregon and lived until 1924 (I have a copy of his death
certificate, and he's in the 1870 census in Oregon).
Citing sources for names and dates would help to clarify.
