Mary Johnson (1929 - 2010)
On Thursday, Nov. 28, 1929 Mary Ella Cain Johnson was born the first of 12 children to the
late James Cain and Hallie Love Cain in Greenwood, Miss.
Mary's early childhood was spent in Leland, Miss. During Mary's early teenage
years, she moved to East Saint Louis, Ill., to live with her aunt, Lovie Kelly. After
relocating to the area, she attended Lincoln High School. Mary believed in education and
self improvement. Her commitment was manifested by her actions. She received her GED in
1978 from State Community College. Mary's most recent Christian church affiliation was
at Metro East Christian Center, under the Pastoral leadership of Henry Brown. She was a
faithful member until her health declined.
In 1949, Mary married Ralph Johnson to their union, four children were born. Mary's
faith and belief provided her strength during the death of three of her four children,
Ralph Johnson Jr., in 1990, Yvonne Jenay Johnson-Marion in 2001, and Cheryl Elaine
Johnson-Small in 2009.
Mary will be forever remembered by many, but especially by: her daughter, Pamela Jean
Johnson of East St. Louis, Ill.; her "adopted family" Leon, Sabrina, Channing,
and Abril Hunter of Belleville, Ill.; a son-in-law, Ronalo Marion of St. Louis, Mo.; six

Red Banks, Miss.; three sisters, Deloris Gilmore of Belleville, Ill., Mattie Chew of
Columbia S.C., and Barbara Cain of Oakland, Calif.; a husband, Ralph Johnson of
Collinsville, Ill.; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Funeral: A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Greater
Faith Christian Church, 438 North 82nd Street Centerville, Ill. A private burial will take
place in Sunset Gardens, Millstadt, Ill.
