Okay, this will show that I can jump right in and ask really
important but dumb questions!!
A few years ago, my wife and I visited Amite County to do research. I
spoke with several people in the court house, and had a long
conversation with a very nice young lady in the library there. I
believe that I did discuss with the librarian the correct
pronunciation of the name of the county.
On the way back to Houston we stopped off for lunch with my wife's
uncle in Port Arthur. His wife's family was from Amite County and she
almost feel out of her chair laughing at my pronunciation of the
name.
Thus my plea! Please, someone give me the correct phonetic of
pronunciation AMITE so I can once again talk about where I have
been!!!! Many thanks!

Gary, I am not an authority on the subject but I just got off the phone
with someone who lives in Liberty and he pronounced it:
AH-Mitt (rhymes with Kit)
