I am seeking information on the ancestors and/or descendants of
Jefferson " Jeff " CAIN. He was born on April 18, 1827, in either
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or in the State of Ohio, and died February
10, 1897 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was buried in Oakland Cemetery in
Atlanta. He was married to Elizabeth ( maiden name unknown ). Elizabeth
was born in 1835 and died March 8, 1902. She was buried alongside Jeff.
Jeff was a locomotive engineer for the Western and Atlantic Railroad (
W.&A. ) and was operating the famed civil war locomotive " The General "
on May 12, 1862 from Atlanta, Georgia to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Jeff
made a scheduled stop at Big Shanty, Georgia ( now Kennesaw, Georgia )
for the crew and passengers to have breakfast. Shortly after stopping, a
small group of Federal forces ( known as Andrews Raiders ), disguised in
civilian clothing, carried out a planned high jacking of the train. Thus
began the "Great Locomotive Chase".
I would appreciate any information on the above subject. I thank you
kindly for your time and consideration.
