I am researching three Civil War soldiers from White County, surname CAIN. They probably
were two brothers and a cousin, and I'm hoping someone can clarify their relationship.
The particulars: George CAIN, of Enfield, private, Co. C 40th Illinois Infantry; served
August 26, 1861-July 24, 1865. Joshua CAIN, White County, pvt, Co. G, 87th Illinois
Infantry, served August 14, 1862-June 16, 1865. Buried Kitty Sweeten Cemetery. William J.
CAIN, Shawneetown, pvt, Co. F, 87th Illinois Infantry, Oct 1, 1862-June 16, 1865. Born
1831, died 1909. Kitty Sweeten Cemetery. William and Joshua were in the same infantry
regiment, different companies, and were discharged on the same day. I believe that Joshua
and George were cousins, sons of Alexander and William P. Cain, respectively, so I need
to know whether William was the brother of George or Joshua. I believe William's wife
was Bathsheba Nelson. Census returns show that both Alex and William had sons named
William. Thank you. Zoe Lappi!
