The Isle of Man's indigenous culture is a mixture of Norwegian (Viking) and Irish
(GaelicUlster)
The ENGLIH influence is quite recent
The name Cain is a Gaelic name being a clan name from west ulster but it has been in in
the Isle of Man since at least the 12th century and probably much longer. In its Irish
form it started as O Cathain (pronounced O Cahoin) meaning descendant of a warrior)
The Irish name was anglicised as Kane or Keane. The Manx form is Cain or Caine.
There are several unrelated families called Cain, of which our is ours associated with a
farm called Renshent
I am not aware of any branch of the family in USA although it is quite possiblle
The parliament of the Isle of Man is called Tynwald and is a Viking legacy. The name comes
from old Norwegian Ting Vollr meaning the Assembly Field . It celebrated 1,000 years of
continuous existence in 1989 which makes it the oldest such assembly in the world and
certainly the oldest parliament in the Commonwealth
We Manx are the smallest nation in the British Isles but no less proud of our heritage
than anyone else
