CONNEAUT - Ruth E. Manniko Cain, age 87, of Lake Road, died at her home surrounded by her
loving family, Sunday, August 2, 2009.She was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Garfield Heights,
Ohio, the daughter of the late Milton and Fanny May (Larkman) Johnson. When Ruth was two,
her father Milton died and Fanny married Howard Fife and moved to Conneaut with Ruth at
the age of six. She has resided in Conneaut since that time.Ruth graduated from Conneaut
High School in 1940 and from Mt. Sinai Nursing School as a registered nurse in 1943. Ruth
worked at Brown Memorial Hospital for many years and also worked as a nurse for Dr.
Doran.She married Robert E. "Tim" Manniko on August 22, 1942. They were married
until his death in 1985. She married Robert K. Cain on Feb. 18, 1989.Ruth was an active
member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, a member of
the Altar Guild and a member of the choir. She also sewed quilts for the
"Covergirls."Mrs. Cain was a member of th!
e American Legion Auxiliary, visiting local schools to teach American flag etiquette. She
also served on the Teen Town Board and was active in Girls' State. In her leisure
time, she enjoyed knitting, reading, doing puzzles and spending time with her family.She
was preceded in death by her father, Milton Johnson; her mother, Fanny Johnson Fife; her
stepfather, Howard Fife; her first husband, Robert Manniko; her great-grandson, James
Daniel Poff; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Manniko; and son-in-law, James Bunnell.Ruth is
survived by her loving husband, Robert Cain; a sister, Betty Koykka of Roaming Shores,
Ohio; four daughters, Dianne (Ron) Young, Cheryl "Bodie" (Mick) Poff and Karen
(Harlan) Smith, all of Conneaut and Debra (Phil) Gruzoskyof Porter, Ind.; one son, Kevin
Manniko of Conneaut; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Cain of Portland, Ore.; a stepson, J.G. Cain
of Warner-Robbins, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, Matt Bunnell, Melissa Meeker, Bethany (Joe)
Hardy, Stephanie Yopp, Heather (Rick)!
Bell, Molly (Tony) Todaro, Karen (Aaron) Adcock, Collin "Chip" Young,
Daniel (Kelly) Poff, Kaitlin Gruzosky, Michelle Williams and Adrianna "Adie"
Manniko; and 19 great-grandchildren, Jaren, Michael, Stefan, Samantha, Joseph, Danielle,
Makenna, Isabella, Kayden, Gage, Emmalise, Rebecca, Dylan, Kian, Addison, Ashten, Tanner,
Grace and Payton.Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, August 6th, at the Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church, corner of 876 Grove St. and Lake Road, Conneaut, with the Rev.
Franklin Gore, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.Friends may
call at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut, from 6 to 9 p.m., Today,
Wednesday, August 5th, and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.In lieu
of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church Family Center. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home and the
