Message Board Post:
Susan Hawkins Cain, 40, of Earlysville, departed this life Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the
Martha Jefferson Hospital.
She was born March 20, 1969, in Charlottesville, the daughter of Hugh M. Hawkins and
Deborah C. Hawkins.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Hugh Morris Hawkins Sr. and
Dorothy Tarleton Hawkins; and her maternal grand-parents, A. F. Spear and Ditt Suzanne
Craun.
Susan was a very successful and accomplished business woman. She started in the entry
ranks and worked her way to the top of the following companies, Martha Jefferson Hospital,
G. E. Fanuc, Plow and Hearth, Intuit Corp., and finally PBM Products, who were her caring
extended family. Her career was built on caring for people and showing them the spirited,
funny side of life. By doing so, she inspired and influenced many people.
She was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and the University of Virginia, a member
of Church of Our Saviour, and active in the Society of Human Resource Management and the
Albemarle/Charlottesville Human Resource Association.
Above all, Susan loved her family, friends, sports, music, and the outdoors, especially
being with people, socializing and enjoying all the beautiful landscapes nature provides.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband, Thomas Joseph Cain; her
children (the sparkling love's of her life), Ellie and Kevin; her sister, Kimberley H.
Greist and her husband, Darton III, and children, Darton IV, Megan, and Ethan; and
numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family extends thanks to all the fine people at Martha Jefferson Hospital, especially
the "award winning" South 7 floor nursing staff. You are amazing!
The family's heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. Gordon Morris and his staff for their
outstanding care and compassion. Susan always felt like a person under their carenever a
patient!
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2009, at the Church of Our Saviour
on Rio Road. Interment will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the Hill
and Wood Funeral Home.
Friends may sign the guest book at
