Lisa in CA: About 10 years ago, I obtained a record from the Family History
Library which may have a connection to your Cains. It was listed: John H.
Cain. Personal Collection of Papers relating to Jefferson Co. GA History and
Genealogies 3 Feb 1959 LDS Family History Library #184820.
This letter written to a Mrs. Franklin C. Cain of Saint Matthews, SC on Jan.
11, 1932 from Harry Howard Martindale in Oxford Indiana tells of the history
of the Cain and other families who were Quakers living in the Ninety-Six
District in SC just prior to the Revolutionary war. Many migrated to
Waynesville Ohio in Warren, Green and Clinton Counties. A few years later
many of these people and their children came on into Wayne County, IN and
then scattered to various parts of this state and elsewhere. He goes on to
say that other families from the same neighborhood in SC came to OH about the
same time. Among those who came wor within the decade were the PEARSONS,
CAMPBELLS, CAINS, BURNS AND OTHER FAMILIES. Some of the families went to
Tennessee from there (an certainly could have gone to Georgia as well).
I am a descendant of Jonathan Cain and Barbara Harold of Padgett's Creek,
Union Co. SC and he refers to them often in his letter to Mrs. Franklin Cain.
Since your ancestor is William Jonathan Cain, it is suspicious that you too
are out of this immigrant Jonathan Cain and Barbara Harold. You might want
to extract this portfolio of information as referenced in the beginning from
the LDS records and begin to search in those counties in Georgia mentioned.
Best of luck to you in your search for your roots,
Carol Cain Headley
