Perhaps of interest to the list or to other descendents of Patrick of
Grayson KY, I have had my father's DNA tested recently through FamilyTree
DNA, and submitted to the Cain DNA group. We have found a perfect 25-marker
match, and are waiting on the 37 marker test results. Through the match I
was able to identify the location in Ireland that Patrick Cain of Grayson
County KY emigrated from, Co. Galway in western Ireland. The results are
also submitted to the Ysearch database, so that we can find further common
ancestors. I am hopeful to finally identify the family in Ireland, and go
from there to the U.S. It is all very recent and exciting, and it feels
like I may have broken through my 1790 brick wall at last.
So far we have believed that this Patrick is not related to the families who
I refer to as Patrick Cain b 1712 of Augusta VA and Orangeburgh SC, and
Patrick Cain b 1741 of Abbeville SC and Livingston KY. There are three
distinct lines, those two plus my Patrick Cain b 1760-1765 of Grayson Co KY.
The DNA results would seem to confirm the lack of connection to the
Abbeville SC Cains, as that Patrick Cain is in a different group of Cains
from northern Derry Co Ireland. I do not know if any DNA testing has been
done on the Patrick Cains of Augusta Co, but do not believe there is a
relationship as he has been traced to Ballaugh Parish, Isle of Man.
The DNA testing has also seemed to eliminate a relationship to William Cain
of Baltimore, who is so far in an unidentified group.
DNA testing is not for everyone, but it is helping us to place our Cains
into respective groups of DNA families, and from there we are at least
pointed to the right individuals to research. I would encourage all of you
to consider it, the more of us that find out we are related, the easier it
will be to put the pieces together. I would be happy to discuss this with
anyone who would like to find out more about how we proceeded and what is
involved.
Candy

I passed this post on to a few researchers who have shared a lot of Cain
info with me. One person replied to say he had researched this Patrick Cain
for a while. He owned a tavern in MD and most of his descendents migrated
to the Carolinas. Hope that helps Patrick find a home in someone's tree.
My Cains migrated from (possibly first MD) NJ, PA,then to VA/WV (Reedy, Wood
Co. VA abt 1814).
Then around 1910-1920 my great grandfather and siblings moved to PA, OH, and
MO. I am looking for info on Luanna (aka Louise) Cain b 1873 in Reedy, Roane
Co. WV and died in 1943, possibly in Pgh PA. From what I can see on old
pics, she may have never married.
