Bruce C. Cain, born to Arthur and Lena Caruthers Cain, pioneer families of North Georgia,
died at a Tucson hospital Oct. 10, 2003, on his 89th birthday. He received his education
and was employed in that general area until World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in
1942 and served in Army finance in the European Theater.
After discharge in 1946, he joined the Foreign Service of the U. S. Department of State in
Washington, D. C. His first assignment was as consular officer at the consulate in Belize.
He served in the same capacity at the consulate in Antigua, British West Indies. He was
then posted to the embassy in Guatemala City, Guatemala as disbursing officer. Next, he
was assigned as traveling budget and fiscal officer to a number of U.S. diplomatic posts
in Central and South America. He continued in that capacity for the balance of his foreign
service career.
In 1951 he returned to private employment with the Riggs National Bank in Washington, D.C.
where he met and later married Betty Curran of Mount Vernon, Ohio. They continued to work
and reside in Washington until retirement in the early 1970s. In retirement they traveled
extensively in all but two of the contiguous states and several foreign countries. In
1975, they came to Green Valley, where they spent approximately 25 years of golden
retirement.
Bruce's memberships included the Valley Presbyterian Church and the Elks Club #2592,
both in Green Valley. Also, Ridgedale Lodge No. 660 F&AM; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry
S.J., USA; Alma's Temple AAONMS, in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Washington, D.C.
Bruce was preceded in death by son John David in 1955 and by his beloved wife Betty in
1999. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are pending with interment in Arlington National Cemetery where he will join
Betty and John David in eternal rest.
