My husband's g-g-grandfather, John M. HAZLETT, was apparently born in Georgia in 1831
although in the 1850 DeKalb Co, GA, census his age is listed as 22 and he was working as
overseer for his future father-in-law, Elijah BYRD. He married Mary B. "Mollie"
BYRD 7 May 1856. He may have died during the Civil War as there seems to be no record of
him after 1863. In 1878 Mollie married Wesley HOLLINGSWORTH in Polk Co., GA.
John's son, Samuel Lewis HAZLETT, was born 1857 in Cedartown, Polk Co., GA. He first
married Nannie (Nancy? Ann?) CAIN - don't know where. At some point he or they moved
to Texas where son Homer Hollingsworth HAZLETT was born 26 Nov 1883 in Itasca, Hill Co.,
TX, followed by daughters Annie and Johnnie. S.L., as he was known, married again to Liza
Jane EDWARDS.
Do any of these names tie in with your HAZLETTs (by whatever spelling)? I want to find
John's ancestors and where they came from before landing in Georgia. My husband's
aunt Juanita told me their ancestry was Irish, which seems to tie in with most of the
lines here.
I'm also trying to find out virtually anything about Nannie CAIN. She is alleged to be
either part or full Indian but that may be just one of the many family legends about
Native American ancestry that abound. On the other hand, it could explain why she seems to
have just appeared from nowhere :).
Many years ago my late mother-in-law showed me a tiny picture of an extraordinarily
beautiful young woman and said she was Don's great-grandmother and that she was a
full-blooded Indian. I now have that picture. On the back is written "Mrs. Ed
Richey" and "Aunt Nannie." Is Ed Richey a previous husband of Nannie's
or is Mrs. Ed Richey the person who gave the picture to Don's mother?
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
