Have you gone back further like to SC? I have just returned from
researching
Jonathan Cain and Barbara Harrold in SC and ran across a Patrick Cain there.
I am also wondering if Alexander Cain who came into Charleston as well is
related to John (Jonathan) Cain? I could not fine a connection.

There were two separate Cain families in SC who carried the name, Patrick.
One family, who settled in Old Ninety Six District (Abbeville) was from
Ireland. I have only scanty data on this family. The other Cain fmaily
settled in Barnwell District and originated in the Isle of Man, arriving in
the Virginia Colony (Augusta Co.) in the early part of 1746/47. I am
descended from this family and have a lot of data on them, going back to 1600
on the Isle of Man. Unfortunately, you haven't stated anything in your
inquiry which would suggest that your Patrick Cain's ancestors were in my
line but that doesn't necessarily mean that he was not a descendant of my
Patrick's brother John or his son William. I know that some of them "went
west" but I have not attempted to trace them.
Where does your family tradition state they were from before coming to this
country? Depending on that answer, I may be able to help you.
