I am forwarding a message from one of the other listowners
concerning the recent flurry of worms and viruses. These
are not sent or passed on by Rootsweb although they may show
a Rootsweb address. The virus simply copies addresses from
an infected subscriber and propagates itself.
Excellent free virus software is available at:
http://antivirus.cai.com/cgi-bin/ipe/update.cgi
Updates may be downloaded regularly.

Hello my friends,
I hope the listowner doesn't shoot me for this message, but I have seen
this going around and it is hitting every list I'm on!
The new viruses being sent has just came through to me with the subject
showing as Mississippi-L. I figured I'd let everybody know about this
one.
It looks real, but let's remember a few points:
1) Rootsweb does not send out attachments.
2) Rootsweb is sent in plain text format, NOT HTML!
I have seen too many folks on the other lists saying they could not open
the file. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHED FILES ! Do not click on it! It
does nothing that you can see, and you will think it has done nothing,
but it will infect your system. It will have a familiar subject line,
but the body of the message will show a light blue background and a
link to a place called
www.stuart.messagemates.com/~~~~~ I don't
recall the rest of the line, but it will also have a virus attached
to the message. There are many names for the attached files.
See McAfee or Symantec's sites for info on this virus. Based on
what I've told you about Rootsweb, you should know that this was
not originated from Rootsweb!
I only send out this warning because so many new people to the internet
may not be aware of what is going on (like us seasoned folks). Do not
open any attached files that end with a .exe. I am concerned that some
of these new people may open one of these viruses.
please be careful my friends,
Tina Hall
