I have Ida Cain b. May 1880 (from 1900 census), married James Smith Jr. on Aug 9, 1896.
Her marriage certificate appears to bear the name of John A. Cain, but I am not sure it
says John. J something. Actually it's not his signature either, but someone signed
for him and he made his mark. Ida was only 16 when she married and I believe her father
would have had to sign for her. Ida is not on the 1880 census with John Cain, but being
born in May could have not been born yet when the census came around? Then was out of the
house by 1900 so does not appear on that census either. John has a daughter Minnie b. May
1881, but that doesn't preclude the existence of another daughter born May 1880.
Ida had 2 sons, Grover Cleveland and Dewey, and then she and apparently James too died
before 1910. I can't find their burial online. The boys went to live with a David
Floyd in Hardeman County. In 1910 he shows widowed, and the children are listed as his
step grandchildren, although I think they were more likely technically "adopted"
grandchildren. I don't know what the actual connection is between Mr. Floyd and the
two boys.
If anyone has any information on these folks I'd appreciate it.
