There are two ways to establish your relationship to other Cains. One is to compare family trees in the hope that they connect. Sometimes they do. But you will be limited to the last 150 years, perhaps more in some cases, that written records cover.
The other is do take a Y-DNA test if you are a male (or have a male Cain relation donate a sample by a simple cheek swab if you are female). This does not rely on written records and will reach right back to when surnames originated. So it works for learning what country, even what region within a country, that your Cains came from. See the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine

The farthest I can get with the Cain name is Thomas Joseph Cain, 1813-1886. His spouse was Mary Rebecca Swann. His oldest son was Thomas Ruffin Cain. The Ruffin name was carried down to my father who was James Ruffin Roberts. I was told Ruffin is Ruthven and dates back to the 1100's. Three brothers were Lords or Dukes, fought against the King. Two died during battle. The third escaped to the Isle of Man, changed the name to Ruffin so as not to be found by the King. I believe Thomas Joseph Cains mother may have been a Ruffin. My dad said that Roberts came from Ireland and the Cains came from Scotland. With this information can you help?
Thanks, Linda Roberts Kish
