Ramona Ann Cain
August 25, 1925 - July 17, 2009
Ramona Ann Cain, age 83, passed away on July 17th, 2009 at the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida inpatient unit. Mrs. Cain was born August 25th, 1925 in Thurmont Maryland. She was raised by her older half-sister and her husband, who she fondly referred to as "Mater and Pater". She was a Stambaugh, with 19 children in the family. Mrs Cain was a lifelong and devoted Roman Catholic, and was raised by Sisters for a short time in the Depression. When Mrs. Cain was in her late teens and early twenties, she served as a nanny for several prominent families. One of them was the Anheuser-Busch family, as she was the nanny and tutor for August A. Busch, III and his sister. She was always pleased when she would see commercials of him on television. Mrs. Cain was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert Hood Cain. They met in 1946 while she was working in Civil Service. She said that he got her attention by throwing paperclips at her at work! However, he continued to woo her by wri!
ting her romantic letters nearly every day of 1946. They were married on New Year's Eve of 1946 in a candlelight ceremony. Robert surprised her by converting to Catholicism for her. They had two children together, Michael and Melanie. The Cain family loved to travel and spent a week each year in St. Augustine, Florida. They would take long trips in their small Aljo trailer all over the United States to National Parks. Mrs. Cain was a wonderful homemaker and her life revolved around her family. Mrs. Cain lived in St. Augustine since 1974 and considered it her home.
Ramona was very proud of her daughter Melanie's accomplishments with HAWKE wildlife and never missed their fund-raising garage sale. She enjoyed making her famous chili and baked goods and helping out. She saved all her newspaper stories and enjoyed seeing and hearing about the animals. She was an amazing grandmother who went out of her way to make her grandchildren feel special. She was also blessed to be able to spend her last years getting to know her great-grandchild, Robert Stage-Cooper, who is the namesake of her husband. Ramona was very independent, still living on her own and driving her 1983 Mercedes up until she fractured her hip in April.
Ramona Cain is survived by her daughter Melanie Cain-Stage, her son-in-law Samuel, her granddaughter Jessica Stage (Jason Cooper), and her great-grandson, Robert. She is also survived by her son Michael Cain, and grandchildren Charlotte and Alex Cain who live in Virginia. The Funeral Mass will be held on July 24th at 9am at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Her wishes were for donations to be sent in her name to HAWKE, Inc. PO Box 188 Elkton, FL 32033 or on the web at www.hawkewildlife.org.
