No, it must not be, mine was in Indiana Cavalry. Thank you anyway, and sorry I couldn't help with your mystery.

HI,
I just looked at his papers again. It clearly says both his real name (Christopher Cregan) and his alias, which is spelled Charles "Cain" & Charles "Caine". He served in Company E, 20th Regiment, Maine Infantry. It is probably not the same person if your papers do not show his alias. But, if you want a look at his papers anyway, send me an e-mail to send it to.
Regards,
Joe

That is really unusual, I wonder why. I have the Civil War papers for my Charles Cain, so I doubt they could be the same. What state and regiment was your great uncle?

My second great grand uncle in law was Christopher Cregan who is listed in his civil war pension records as having the alias "Charles Cain". I don't know why he had an alias in the military, and I don't know if there is a connection with your charles cain, but I am willing to share the documents I have with you.
regards,
Joe
