I have been researching the Cain family for a couple of years and have hit a dead end with a Marshall T. Cain. He was Born about 1916 Illinois. His father was Timothy Joseph Cain and his mother's maiden name was Cora F. Divine. Timothy Joseph Cain was a police officer in Gillespie, Illinois. My Marshall T. Cain had one brother Raymond J. Cain from what I could find. He may have other siblings but I cannot confirm that at this point. If our Marshall Cain's are one and the same I can trace his family back to Ireland. Would love to hear from you!

The Cain DNA project has some Cains from the Isle of Man. A DNA test would confirm if your Cains really are from Man. See www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine

Several Cain of NC family lines are represented in the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine
One descendant, a community college professor, is quite an authority on Cains of NC. He can be contacted by members of the Cain DNA project.

Is Marshall a popular name amongst your husband's branch of the Cains? A Marshall Cain belongs to the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine
Since his DNA test is already done, a quick test of your husband's DNA would confirm if a relationship exists. See www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine

May not be able to help you with Thomas Cain's parents, but DNA will probably locate where his family came from in Ireland or the Isle of Man. That is of some interest in its own right, & may help to pick up Thomas's father indirectly. For how DNA testing works, & for what Cain groups have been uncovered so far, see www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine

also tracing a Thomas Cain ca 1800s

Carol
Your brother is certainly a Cain descendant, and a male. The problem is that he is not paternally a Cain & so would not have the Cain Y-DNA but that of the Locascio male line (if that is his surname as well as yours). The Y Chromosome is passed down from father to son along with the family surname, so you need a Cain cousin or uncle, if you can find one. 1849 is problematic, although I traced all male-line Cain descendants of my ancestor William Cain who migrated in 1848.
