--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apple Valley resident George A. Cain, 95, formerly of 101 Williams St. in Marlborough, Mass., a retired farmer and hatchery owner, died May 8, 2003, at Desert Valley Hospital after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of six years, Wilma (Ramsey) Cain of Apple Valley; three sons: Dr. Richard A. Cain and his wife, Joanne, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Robert E. Cain and his wife, Nancy, of Holden, Mass., and David G. Cain and his wife, Anita, of Ormond Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (Frazer) Cain, who died in 1971; his second wife of 20 years, Eleanor (Swenson) Cain of Gardener, Mass., who died in 1991, and his third wife of four years, Thelma (Hartley) Cain of Ennis, Mont., who died in 1996. Mr. Cain was born on Aug. 1, 1907, in Marlborough, Mass., son of Austin H. and Eva (Comstock) Cain. He graduated from Marlborough High School and Bryant and Straton School of Business in Boston, Mass. He lived in Marlborough for 57 years before !
his retirement. Mr. Cain owned a farm and chicken hatchery on Williams Street in Marlborough, Mass., for many years and sold baby chicks throughout New England under the name "Cain's Chicks." After selling his farm, he bought an Airstream trailer and traveled across the United States for almost 30 years, in search of the perfect fishing hole, stopping in Homestead, Fla.; Holden, Mass.; Ennis, Mont.; and Apple Valley. He was an avid fly fisherman and he spent many summers in western Montana just north of Yellowstone National Park. While living in Montana, he became a 32nd degree Mason. He enjoyed traveling, attending church services and exploring out-of-the-way places. At the age of 92, he bought his first computer and learned how to e-mail his children and grandchildren. He had nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Because of his faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, he has gone ahead to welcome those of like faith. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at!
Victor Valley Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to SonLife Community Church, 7928 SVL Box, Victorville, CA 92392. Victor Valley Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Denise, I found your post interesting, because I have Cains and Coffins in the same area of NY that you do. I have a Charles Hubbs who married Marian Coffin 1774 Nantucket, who lived in the Roots, Montgomery Co., NY area for a good protion of their lives. Their daughter Jane Hubbs married Thomas Cain, 1802 probably in Montgomery Co., NY. There is also a possible sister to Thomas whose name is Catherine bn 1774 who married Jonah Knapp. I don't know if there is a connection, but it is interesting.
Does anyone have information about Daniel Cain who died in Sugarcreek Twp., Green Co., OH, after 1850. He is in the Guilford Co., NC, census in 1790, bought the land in Ohio in 1806.
Any information would be appreciated.
Sincerely Dianne Cain Black

Good morning folks. I see now that this census taker did indeed switch back
and forth in forming his "J" so I believe you are right that he is James J.
and not Isham J. as I had thought.
However, I really do not see the age as 59 ... but 54. In looking at the
census enumerator's formation of the number nine, he always formed a large, fully
round oval as the upper portion of the nine. In looking at his "fours" he is a
bit less consistent ... but I see that sharp angle and small opening at the
top in the second digit of the age given for Jas. J. Cain ... entry line #32. I
am still seeing age 54.
Still ... he could be the missing James Jr, son of James & Mary (Weeks) Cain.
It would be nice to look more closely at the other nine Cain families who are
also in the 1850 SW Cape Fear Division. Certainly Wm & Wm Jr Cain [of the Wm &
Olive (Regan) Cain branch] are among those. For example, looking at the
naming pattern of children of Wm Jr, it is interesting to see the similar names
for some of his children: Samuel, William, John, Sarah, and Katherine.
Did most of this group of Cain folks end up around Elizabethtown in Bladen
county?
Altogether, I see 26 Cain families in 1850 census soundex of Bladen county:
(note soundex has 28 but I discount the two COWAN entries)
Cape Fear NE Divisionn has eighteen families :
name, census page
John, 74
Mary E., 76
Jane, 77
Meridy, 77
Amos, 78
David R., 78
Elizabeth, 80
John, 80
Lucy, 80
Peter, 80
Samuel, 80
Evan Jr, 81
Evan Sr, 81
James W, 83
Elizabeth, 84
George, 84
John, 92
Allen, 98
Cape Fear SW Division has ten families
name, census page
Isham, 104
James J. 104
James W., 110
James, 111
Samuel, 112
William, 112
William Jr, 112
Mary J., 116
among the missing in this list are those who moved to other counties before
1850; e.g. Catherine Cain (widow of William) and her children in Cumberland
county by 1850.

Al Rose

I just took a look at the 1850 SW Cape Fear, Bladen census for this
CAIN family ... with wife Spicy & son Travis.
To my eye, the father's name does not look like James. The first
letter of this man's name is an "I" and it looks to me to be the abbreviation for
Isham. Secondly, his age is clearly written as age 54 not 59.
I read this census entry as:
(all born NC)
Ia~. J. Cain, male, age 54, occupation=cooper, born NC
( note: I think probably Isham J. Cain)
Spicy Cain, female, age 54, born NC
Citty A. Cain, f, 25 (note: would think this nickname "Kitty" for Catherine
Ann)
Casedy Cain, m, 22, occ=laborer
Travis Cain, m, 21, occ=laborer
Sam~l. Cain, m, 16, occ=laborer (note: written as abbrev for Samuel Cain).
Andrew I. Cain, m, 14
Eleanor Cain, f, 12
Sophia Cain, f, 9
Additional note ... see previous census page to this one ... another Isham
Cain born about 1817 ... spouse Fatima born NC ca 1818 with male child age 1 ...
similarly written abbreviation of child's given name. So I think this is an
Isham Cain born ca 1849 in NC.
....... anyone with further info ... please reply to rayzor(a)nu-z.net
