The family at some point moved to Ill. and she had othre siblings born there. If you can connect to this in any way, please email me. I haven't looked in Ohio.
Hi all,
As I have bugged all of you with my emails [for those of you who may not have read them, each family name that I have sent this message to has a person with that name buried at the cemetery] about research on the Clapp Factory, Cemetery and Village, I thought I'd bug you again about the clean up and other wonderful progress we have made. On Saturday, March 29th from 8 - 6 the Clapp Factory Cemetery Preservation League (we are working on our incorporation papers and non-profit status) is having a clean the cemetery day. Any and all that are able to help us are welcome to help us. Just because we said 8 - 6 doesn't mean you have to be there all day. We'll take anytime that you can spare.
For purposes of March 29th, I would like to define "clean-up".
cutting and removing vines
picking up rubbish
raking and removing leaves We do not plan to try to clean the entire cemetery that day as the task would be impossible.
We need anyone who is coming to bring any of the following items:
rakes
clippers or snips
ax
shovel
small saw - for some of the larger vines
removing any fallen dead logs
Please mark your name on the items so that we can identify who they belong to in case you get separated. If you have gloves, would be a good idea to bring them. If you need directions, please let me know and I will send them out on an individual bases.
For further information on the Clapp:
http://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=ygrp&.intl=us&.partner=&.done=ht...
You can log on to it using the ID of cemetery_clapp with a password of "visitor". Please log off so others may view the info we have gathered.
Since the newspaper article on the "Urban Cemeteries" was written, we've had several new family contacts and GA Power is willing to work with us to get the cemetery straighten out. We're just going to keep on working towards getting it preserved.
Happy family hunting,
kemis

I believe Joseph D. could be Davis, aand Mary could be Mary "Meg" born to John and 3rd wife Sarah. Thank you for the other information, some I had but not all of it. Two of Flonny's kids live down the road from me. I have talked with one of them. She and her brother went through their Mom's papers but could not find anything on Rhoda either. Well happy hunting. You can e-mail direct if you want. Thanks, Carolyn

Jennie, I did receive your message on Rhoda Cain. She was my step gr. gr.gr.grandmother. I have no information on children: Joseph D. and Mary. Could these children be from a former marriage of Rhoda's? Do you know where she is buried? Was she ever in the poor farm in Clay Co., Indiana? I do know about these children: Nancy, Eliza, and Lydia. John remarried in 1884 to Minerva Jones. They did not have any children. John had 2 children by his first wife,my gr. gr.gr.grandmother. His first wife was Elizabeth Evans. Their children were Emma "Amy" and a son named either John B. or Evan W. John's second wife was Sarah Jane Cook Beaman. They had 5 children. They were-Lucinda, Margaret "Meg", Davis, Mary "Cal", Elizabeth, and Frank. Do you know anything about any of these?

There is a prominent African-American named Herman Cain who is President of the National Restaurant Association. You might try to get in touch with his family.
Since you are new to ancestry research, I can give you a general overview of the Cain name. It is "morphed" into many variations including Caine, Kean, O'Cain, and Kain, Kane, Cane, etc. I have found several origins. One is English, from Caynnes and Keynnes, and was found in England in some early census records (some almost 1,000 years old). One is Irish, coming from the Irish word Can (with a long A) which means lake. I have also heard it is Jewish, Cain being the Biblical spelling of the Jewish name Cohen.
My branch came before the Revolution in the 1700's and were probably English, because that was who was here before the Revolution--The English--it was a British colony. Many Irish immigrants came much later, after the 1860's, due to the potato famines. My Cains came to Pennsylvania then to Ohio. They fought for the Union in the Civil War and were anti-slavery. The census records from 1790 show how many people were in each family, and how many slaves they owned. None of the Cains I've researched had slaves.
There is a really good book by Edwin Ball, "Slaves in the Family."
It has many resources about how to find African-American roots through plantation records in the South. He is a white guy and his family was from Georgia, having come from England in the 1600's. He actually found many blood members of his family who are African-American and has had reunions with them.
My theory is that if you go back far enough, everyone is related.
Good luck in your search.
Candis (Cain) Burkhardt
