THERE IS A GOOD POSSIBILITY THAT MARY WAS A DAUGHTER OF ONE OF THE CAIN FAMILIES WHO CAME IN FROM KENTUCKY AND SETTLED IN ILLINOIS AND MO. ALL THE WAY FROM 1820 THROUGH THE 1850-60 TIME FRAME. ALL OF THESE FAMILIES THRIVED BY BEING HUNTER AND FISHERMEN AND WERE NOT ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO THE CENSUS TAKER. (ESPECIALLY IF THEY SAW THE CENSUS TAKER FIRST.) THERE ARE SEVERAL MARRIAGE AND DIFFERENT RECORDS, BUT SORTING THEM IS A TASK, BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T STAY IN ONE PLACE LONG.
This family is enumerated in the 1850 census of the Eastern Division of
Cumberland county, NC.
Catherine CAIN age 49
Somantha " age 35
Sophia " age 17
Richardson " age 15
James " age 14
Costin(??) " age 10 (male)
Caroline " age 10
Susannah " age 75
Does anyone have linkage to or further knowledge of this family?
>From the ages of Mrs. Catherine CAIN (born ca 1801) and her last two
children, I think she may be the wife of William Cain and they the parents of
Robert "Wiley"Cain, who by now is married and living nearer to his wife's
STARLING family in the same Eastern Division of Cumberland county. I want to
prove or disprove that hypothesis.
Assuming for the moment that proves true, does anyone have further info on
the supposed mother-in-law, Mrs. Susannah CAIN ( born ca 1775) and which CAIN
was her husband?

Al Rose

Amy,
My gr...grandmother was married to Abel Patrick Cain b. Abt. 1810. His descendants were also told of the 7 brothers.
I wish one day someone would find out who these 7 brothers were and maybe we can come this direction with them instead of going that direction.
Really stuck on the parents of Abel Patrick Cain who married Nancy Elizabeth Knight. They were in Dooley CO, GA, then Tallapoosa Co, AL then Pensacola Florida where he was murdered in about 1834.

I'm trying to trace my husband's family and the family story, I'm
told, is that he is descended from one of the brothers of John Kane,
the folk artist/painter from Pittsburgh, PA.
Is there anyone out there tracking John Kane's family (his original

My grandfather Grady Cain(Henry Wm Grady Cain) had a sister Maude Cain born in either GA or AL in 1880's. She lived in Texas for a while I think and her middle name was Mozelle. She had a daughter Mozelle. Is this the same person? If so I have the Sizemore(her mother's maiden name) line back far but I'm still trying to connect her father WM J Cain of gwinnett GA to the right family for sure. I think his parents were Cicero C Cain and Mary E Wheeler Cain. Let me know if this is the same Maude.

Jim,
I read an old post on a message board the other day which repeated a
family legend of a lost CAIN family bible. Supposedly, there were 7 brothers
who early came to the Cape Fear region from Ireland; this CAIN family was
originally of Scotland. The same note said that these brothers moved inland
from the coast with several going their own way and ending up in MO, TX and
SC. The brothers who stayed in NC are among those whose descendants are found
in Bladen and Cumberland counties. The "lost" bible passed to the hands of a
descendant family whose surname is not CAIN. Of course, I have no idea about
the accuracy of this legend.
I did manage to find the military history of Wiley CAIN. He enlisted
in Cumberland county at age 38 on 24 OCT 1863 for 3 years. He was present or
accounted for with the "Bladen Stars Battery" of 36th Regiment of NC Troops
(2d Regiment of NC Artillery) until transferred to company E of the same
regiment on 18 July 1864. He served with "E" Battery at Ft Fisher during the
engagement 24-25 DEC 1864 and was captured when Ft Fisher fell 15 January
1865. He remained a prisoner at 1st at Point Lookout, MD and later Camp
Elmira, NY until prisoner release on 30 June 1865 after signing the required
Oath of Allegiance. I thought it interesting that this Wiley CAIN signed up
to serve with a Battery led by Bladen county officers.
Wiley and his son, George W. Cain are found with their families in the 1870
and 1880 census of Cross Creek, Cumberland, NC. I am still uncertain if
"Wiley" was his real name or middle name that he went by.
I have been unable to find the burial sites or death records of either George
W. CAIN or his father, Wiley. Would appreciate any further info on these men
or their relatives.

Desperately seeking information about the origins or whereabouts of T.C. Cain (Clarence) and his wife Elena/Lena formerly of North Tulsa, Oklahoma.
They first appear in the 1926 City Directory of Tulsa and disappear from the records after about 1951. I have heard that they moved to California after that time but cannot find them. They had one son of whom I am aware, Sidney White Gershwin Cain who was Killed In Action in the Korean War.
Does anyone know of any relatives of this family? Where was T.C. (Clarence) Cain born? (Possibly Nebraska). What was Elena/Lena Cain's maiden name? Where was she born? (Was she a Rigby?)
African American researchers of the name Cain in the mid-west or plains states please assist.

No, this CAIN family was white. Wiley CAIN served with CSA as a member of the 36th Regiment (2 Regiment of Artillery) at Fort Fisher. He was captured and sent to Elmira, New York and released after the civil war ended in 1865. He and his son both appear with their families in the 1870 & 1880 census of Cedar Creek, Cumberland, NC. I am not sure if "Wiley"was his original first name. His son and grandson, Thomas Wiley Cain and George Wiley Cain are both found in various records being referred to as Wiley Cain. The father of Wiley Cain may have been Robert Cain or he himself may have been Robert Cain. There is a reported death in Cross Creek of a Wiley Cain on 9 Sep 1925 whose father is given as Robert. I don't know which Wiley Cain died in 1925.
