Message Board Post:
I am looking for a John Cain who married Ida Ruth Cora Pollard. She was born in Slackland, Alabama to Ben and Sally Pollard. John and Ida had one child born in Alabama, Johnnie Emma Cain born in 1885, purported to have been named after a local war hero.
The story is (depending on the point of view) that John killed a man in a card game or was killed himself in the game. According to his great granddaughter, his wife and daughter preferred the latter of the two versions. If the previous version was correct then he "left the country".
Ida and daughter ended up in Arkansas where she married my greatgrandfather Christopher Columbus Dickens.
I am hoping there are Cains or Pollards out there that know of this story.

I have a photo of William Cain (jr) on my website: www.proaxis.com/~shammagren In the photo he has an indian look. The story in my family has always been that he was Pawnee Indian. Due to the location I am not sure that Pawnee is correct. William's daughter Charlene did not look Indian but my Grandfather (charlene's son) looked very Indian. I have corresponded with other members of my Cain line and have also found similar Indian Characteristics. Sorry I don't have more information.
