Hi Everyone..
Looking for a connection with JAMES CAIN.. Born in the USA and traveled
to Canada. He indicated on the Canadian Census that he was of African
Nationality.
Details;..........
James W Cain was born about 1830 (I say about, because I have two census
record 10 years a part where James didn't age a day.) He was born in
the USA as were his parents, black.. with African nationality. He left
the USA in time to be recorded on the Canadian census for 1871. He was
age 40.. religion Baptist, occupation Barber.
Living in the same house was.... Alice Cain, age 23, (not sure if this
is a wife or not)
Birth USA, religion Baptist, Nationality African... no occupation.
Also, living in the same house was Charlotte Cain, age 15, birth USA,
religion Baptist, Nationality African.
I doubt Charlotte is Alice's daughter because of their ages.. more
likely a sister who joined them in their quest to come to Canada.
In the next census (1881) he is married to Elizabeth Boyd and they have
two children.. She is also of African nationality but born in Canada.
By the 1891 census he is a widow living with another Barber...in
Georgetown Ontario.
In addition to looking for his parents in the USA.. I would appreciate
any comments with regard to the chances of James coming to Canada via
the underground railway.
Also... would anyone have any thoughts on where I should start my
search in the USA.
I have tried to obtain more info from the Ontario Archives about
James... ie; his marriage records to Elizabeth but they continue to
elude me.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi folks,
I'm a new subscriber in northeast Ohio, who has good intentions but can't
seem to find time for genealogy lately! Nevertheless, you inspire me to make
an effort.
Shameless plug for my web site: If you would like more information about my
Kain ancestors or Cain descendants, please visit my website "Cain
Connections" at http://members.aol.com/dkainc/index.html
You can search my alphabetical indexes for names. To keep it simple, Cains
have their own indexes. My Kain/Cain biography section contains more details
about John Kain's family, in addition to a few family group sheets. There
are quite a number of Cain queries posted in my genealogy guestbook. Feel
free to add your own. Also, I've met about 15 cousins and friends online
who are sharing the research. You will find them via the link box on my

My Family:
John KAIN (CAIN) Sr, my 5th great grandfather, is my earliest known Irish
ancestor.
Born: 1740 to 1750 in Ireland
Parents: _____
Immigration: possibly County Armagh, Province of Ulster, northern Ireland,
from Scottish stock (conjecture)
Jordan's "Genealogical and Personal History of Beaver County, PA" mentions a
tailor named John Kain who emigrated from Ireland with his unnamed wife and
children "at a very early date", settling at Service Creek, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania.
Residence: John Kain settled at the Service Creek Church and Raccoon Creek
area in Moon Township, near Hookstown, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He
purchased the land from John Bryan in 1793, which he farmed, later conveying
land in 1806 to his sons, John Jr and George 1st. By 1800 county lines had
changed, and John's homestead in Allegheny County became part of Beaver
County.
Cain descendants have also been located in:
Beaver, Cumberland, Washington, and Butler Counties of PA;
Columbiana, Meigs, Williams, and Summit Counties of OH;
Hancock County, WV.
Marriage: John Kain married three times:
1. Agnes ____, died 1807 to 1825
2. Judith D. CARNAGEY, b. 1765, d. 1825
3. Martha ____,
Children of John Kain and first wife, Agnes:
(child, born, died, spouse)
1. John Jr 1774 ? ___, Mary (my 4th great paternal Grandparents)
2. George 1st 1778 1858 AGNEW, Mary
3. Hugh * 1780 ? POOL, Mary
4. Sarah * 1782 bef 1834 McCORMICK, James
5. Henry * 1785 ? ? ___
6. James 1787 1850 GREEN, Mary Ann; McELHANEY,Nancy Agnes
7. Samuel 1789 1840 ___, Nancy
8. William 1790 ? TWYFORD, Rachel
9. Nancy Agnes 1791 1860 TWYFORD, Emanuel
10. Daniel 1793-1800 1834 ___, Elizabeth
11. Joseph 1793-1800 ? ___, Catherine
*conjecture.
Military: A representative from the Daughters of the American Revolution
believed that my John Kain Sr served in the American Revolution in the 8th
Regt Pennylvania Infantry. Once extensive (but faulty) proof was submitted to
the Veteran's Office, a new Veteran's headstone was placed at Raccoon Church
Cemetery after 1958 for John Kain. Unfortunately, vital dates on the stone
(1764 - 1838) are wrong. It's possible that military records of John Sr and
his father (?) were mixed by early researchers.
John's son James served in the War of 1812. He was drafted in Beaver County
on April 2, 1812 and discharged about April 2, 1813. Nine close Cain
relations served in the Civil War. (More research needed)
Religion: Service Creek Presbyterian Church in Moon Township, Pa. Records
found date 1822 to 1904.
Death: John Kain died about age 88 or 89 in late 1837 to early 1838. No
Pennsylvania death records were kept prior to 1893, except for a few between
1853 to 1855. A Beaver County Will Book, dated April, 1834, and the recording
date of John's will in late February, 1838, give us an approximate death date.

My Cain is Scicha or anything that resembles it. I have seen it spelled
Scitha, Psyche, Syntha, etc. She married John Boyle in 1834 in KY and Scicha
is how it is spelled on the married record. According to the 1870 Greenup
Co. census she was b. KY. Anyone with anything resembling this name I would
be forever grateful. She was b. about 1808. I have hit a brick wall on both
she and John.
