Can anyone identify the CAIN/CANE family below?? This is the closest I have
been able to come to my Emma, who was b. in 1847, supposedly in TN, and close
to Gibson County. She is hollering for me to find her!!! I assume that the
reason that the family could not be found in TN in 1860 is that they had moved
to TX by that time. BTW, this lookup was courtesy of one of the fine census
volunteers at www.longstreet.net/census.html Thanks. Zou Feagin

of significant interest. His only son is James. His only daughter is Ann.

John Cain who was killed by Indians in Brock's Gap in the area where
Nicholas Kain had obtained a land patent in 1747, and where he lived for

Dear Researchers:

For all who asked about the FirstSearch database: It can be accessed
through any university library system. (I go there through Texas A&M
University: http://www.tamu.edu - go to libraries, etc.
A search on netscape produced the following address:

It's an amazing research tool.
Hope this helps--

Since I shared the author of the Nicholas Cain book and also said he is not my
line rather the immigrant being JONATHAN CAIN, I have received requests for
the Jonathan Cain information so I will share it on rootsweb rather than
responding individually to each of you. I WOULD ALSO APPRECIATE INFORMATION
ON COLLATERAL LINES FROM OUT THERE as you know us genies want the whole story
about a family. Here goes: I got my initial information from Wayne Cain as
he collected everything it seems in his search for his family (and by the way,
I received word from Tom Cain saying that Wayne's widow still has books for
sale for $33. So give her a try if you really need one.) I set out to prove
the line on Jonathan Cain and still have a ways to go. One source I found at
the Family History Library is from JOHN H. CAIN PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PAPERS
RELATING TO JEFFERSON CO. GA HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES. 3 Feb. 1959. #184820.
You can request the microfilm and they will send it to the library nearest
you.
I learned that Jonathan Cain was born in England about 1730 and immigrated to
Charleston, SC (need to verify on passenger lists). He married Barbara Harold
and one source says they came together about 1770. Another source says they
married after they arrived in the mid 1700's and first son, John was born in
NC 22 June 1760. The source mentioned above says they settled in the
Padgett's Creek settlement in Union District, SC about 1777, but that Jonathan
lived in the 96th Dist. at the time of his death sometime prior to Feb. 20,
1784 (old deed recorded at Union Courthouse). They had the following
children:
Celia - abt. 1757, John 1760, Abner 1762, Amelia 1765, Elvira 1767, Abijah
1769 (my ancestor), Barbara 1771, Harold ?, Hardy 1778, Rebecca 1779, Delilah
?, Sarah ?(may have been more). I obtained a copy of a land grant given to
Jonathan by King George II of Great Britain, France and Ireland signed 3
September 1754. It is on file at the SC Archives in Columbia, SC. It is a
total of 450 acres. It was known at that time as Craven County, but later is
Union County SC.
At some point, many of the Cains moved to Warren Co. OH, then on to Wayne Co.
Indiana and later in Fountain Co. IN about 1830. There is a lot of
information in Fountain Co. with quite a few marriages recorded and more
records showing Cains owned much land there. My line continues from Abijah
and wife Martha ? to John and Elvira m. 1827 in IN. Then (my gr-gr f ) John's
son George W. (b. 1843) m. Ann Logsdon in 1866 and migrated to Anderson Co.
KS (1870 census) and on to Quantah, TX. (Note Elvira Cain died in IN and John
migrated with George to Kansas and died & buried in Garnett cemetery). George
moved his family on to Beckham Co. Oklahoma where he is buried in Delhi
cemetery. His son (my gf) John Francis Cain( b. 1866) m. Caledonah Hutchison
in TX and moved to Oklahoma as well. My father was William Harold Cain (b.
1909) m. Fairy A. Hodges and moved to Butler MO in 1931.
I would love to see a Rootsweb in Fountain Co. and Wayne Co. IN as well as
Warren Co OH. We can all help more sites to come about by joining Rootsweb
and paying a membership fee. (See www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-
subscribe.html) I did last week.....please join me.

Since this book on Nicholas Cain's descendants is such a hot item, is is
possible for someone who has the book to post information from it to the list?
There are some of us who not only are new to the list, but new to searching
their Cain line, who don't even know about Nicholas Cain.
Just wondering,
Barbara Berry Meger
I don't know who Lewis Cain is descended from but what I do know is:
Lewis Cain had a brother Charles Cain born in1841.
Lewis Cain was born on December 25,1849 in Monroe County, New York. Lewis was
orphaned at the age of ten. It was said that his brother Charles took Lewis
under his wing but then the Civil War broke out...one story says they both
joined the Union Army. (Although there is no mention of it in Lewis' Obit.)
After the war Lewis ended up in Leland, Illinois and given a home by Mr. and
Mrs. Dexter Severy.
In 1872, Lewis Cain married Marietta Scoville and they moved to Pomona,
Franklin County, Kansas. They had three children.
Charles was a railroad conductor, never married and he died in a Soldier's
Home in Quincy, Illinois on March 21, 1925.
Lewis Cain died on April 13, 1923.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Thank You, Sandra Cain
