Hello all,
I believe that I am a descendant of Captain John Wood (1739) and Rebecca
Cain. Any information regarding these individuals will be greatly
appreciated. Especially anything that will substantiate my claim that their
son, William (1787) is the same Wm. who married Mary Woodcock at St.
George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario in 1819. Rebecca's father was Isaiah
(Josiah) Cain and her mother, Catherine. Capt. John Wood was originally
buried at Caintown, Ontario but his grandson had his remains moved to Lewis
Corners, Oswego Co. New York in 1901.
Someone out there may be interested in the following information which is
in St. George's diocese reading room in Kingston, Ontario.
Josiah Cain d. January 28, 1805 Fredericksburgh Twp. (Lennox&Addington Co.,
Ontario)
Catherine Cain d. March 28, 1803 Fredericksburgh Twp.
Barnabas Cain d. 1799 Fredericksburgh Twp.
Regards to all,

Transported May 1751 Tryal. London.
on the above Cain there was a orphanage in London and they sent the children
to the people in the us that could afford to pay there passage and they worked
the fair of and had a new lease on life. The merchants found out that the
plantation would buy them and there was a lot of kidnapping later quite a
story.
There was one other Patrick Cain he was on the Ship Marcus Hill.
Left Londonberry June 14, 1816 port of entry New York and had 155 passengers.

Dear Listers,
I have uncovered the existance of a PATRICK CAIN who lived in AUGUSTA CO., VA.
from 1746/7 until abt. 1759. (Scotch-Irish Chronicles). Patrick bought land
from Daniel Harrison (survey made by Thomas Lewis March 11, 1746/7) on Muddy
Creek near North Mountain. Does anyone have any claims on this Patrick Cain?
Does anyone possibly know what happened to him after 1759? There was also a
Cornelius Cain who lived in the same community who was in the Revolution.
This name occurs later on in my Cain family so there may be some connection
there.
I know, from reading the accounts in Chalkley's Chronicles of Augusta Co.,
that there were quite a number of settlers killed by the Indians about this
time. I hope this Patrick was not among those killed but if he was and anyone
has a record of this event, it would help me to make a decision about this
Patrick Cain as a possible ancestor.
My Patrick Cain first appeared in Craven County, SC in 1773 when he obtained a
land grant. He could possibly be the same man I found in Augusta Co., VA. He
was a Deputy Surveyor for Craven Co. at the time he got his grant. His
daughter, Alce (Alice) married Nathaniel Walker, Jr.in 1762 (obtained land in
1759 in Craven Co., SC in the same vicinity as Patrick got his later on) so
Patrick and his family may have been in Craven Co. as early as 1760. Any leads
will be most gratefully received. Thanks.

I am looking for any information to the parents and siblings of Lewis Cain.
He was born in Monroe County, New York on December 25, 1849.
Lewis had one brother Charles born in 1841. and died in Quincy, Il in
3-21-1925. Charles was a railroad conductor.
Lewis was left an orphan when he was 10. Stories say that Charles took care
of the 10 year old Lewis but the Civil War took Charles off to serve on the
side of the Union. It has been said that Lewis went with him. We have know
that after the war Lewis stayed with a family in Leland, Illinois for several
years.
Lewis married Marietta Scovill in Earlville, Illinois (or Sandwich, LaSalle
County, Illinois) on November 21, 1872. They moved near Pomona, Franklin
County, Kansas in 1876. Lewis and Marietta had three children, Charles,
Hattie, and Henry Oscar "H.O."
I don't know what state Charles signed up in or where the family may have been
living at the time of the parent's death. Because of the age difference of
the two brothers, I think there were probably other siblings. If any one can
give me any help or clues. I would appreciate it.

I guess this is a new first -- we're posting the January
statistics after, in principle, we could have computed the
February statistics.
Oh well. It's been *extremely* busy around here, dealing
with the explosive growth and the many problems caused by
the El Nino storms.
The executive summary is that we had about 33% growth during
just the month of January:
o 27,751,946 Web files (20,835,802 in Dec) from 2,400
Websites (2,240 in Dec).
- 8,308,561 were HTML pages (not images or cgi-bin)
(5,903,137 in Dec).
- 3,574,701 were cgi-bin database searches and such.
(2,911,509 in Dec).
- 15,784,790 were GIFs (14,529,204) or JPEGs (1,255,586)
(11,849,905 in Dec were GIFs (10,902,627) or JPEGs
(947,279).
o 618,762 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb
Archives and the ROOTS-L Library (472,838 in Dec).
o Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we
shipped about 88,649,000 pieces of mail to the
2,600+ (2,300 in Dec) mailing lists we host.
o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles
to hosts on three continents (same as Dec).
o Approximately 451,786,000,000 bytes in total
(321,408,000,000 in Dec).
Besides adding hundreds of new Websites and mailing lists in
January, we also added new servers and a third and fourth T1
connection to the Internet. (A T1 is about 50 times faster
than a standard modem.) These additions have significantly
increased our costs of operation, but they were essential if
we were to continue to properly support the Internet
genealogical community.
As always, RootsWeb remains supported by user contributions.
Folks who would like to become a RootsWeb Member or Sponsor
(the cost is very modest) are invited to visit:
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
*** You can become a Member easily using your credit card
and our new secure server. ***
Now is a particularly good time for folks to join, because we
have had a huge increase in utilization since Christmas. Our
bandwidth rate has jumped from 321 to 451 gigabytes/month, and
we're having to do numerous upgrades to our servers to support
the load. Your membership can help our capacity keep up with
the demands of the Internet genealogical community.
Thanks to everyone who participates in RootsWeb -- clearly folks
are continuing to exchanging a great deal of information! -B

Sorry I didn't identify the subject of my first post, so I'm sending again
in case some of you missed it. I've already been contacted by a cousin of
the WV branch!
Dear Cain Cousins,
I'm a new member with CAIN ancestors in two branches of my family (WV and
OH). We don't know whether the two branches are related.
OHIO: Richard CAIN, one of the first settlers of Monroe County, was father
of Alfred (b 1808). Alfred and Mary LEFLEN CAIN were parents of the following:
Richard L (1833-1917) + Mary MEHL
Amanda J (1841-1909) + Andrew MEHL (my g-g-grands)
John R (1845- )
Alfred L (1848- )
Nancy (1850- )
Horatio N (1854- )
WEST VIRGINIA: David CAIN (1771-1854)and wife Mary (?) were parents of
Susannah (1799-1884)CAIN SMITH (Mrs. Wm of Harrison County). Susannah was
said to be half Cherokee, but we don't know which parent (if either) was
Cherokee. Susannah is my g-g-g-grandmother. I have memoirs of my great
aunt, who writes briefly of Susannah.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who is related to either branch.
Sincerely,
Louise Sutton Porter
