Hi all -
Karen's put the lists.rootsweb.com server back together with
chewing gum and bailing wire, and it seems to be operating
almost normally right now.
The one problem with the quick fix was that we had to ship
very large digests to a few of high-traffic lists. Assuming
nothing else breaks, that should be a one-time thing.
I'm still preparing to do an OS rebuild, which will now probably
happen tomorrow afternoon or evening. We will probably have a
4 to 6 hour down on the list server during the rebuild.
Sorry for the change of plans, but we're pleased that it looks
like we're going to be able to significantly shorten the downtime.
Cheers, B.

Queries
The following was received from Dr Brian Leverich at Rootsweb.com
----------------------------<snip>---------------------
Hi all -
The server:
lists.rootsweb.com
appears to be very sick. I'm not sure what the problem is, but
it looks like some of the fundamental software libraries have
been corrupted. The SmartList software and virtually all other
packages on the server are critically dependent upon those
libraries.
I'll be doing a partial or full reload of the operating system
on that box, and that will take me between 8 and 32 hours
depending on how things go and how much coffee I can stand.
That means we'll be down today and probably tomorrow, and Sunday
we'll be playing catch-up. I think we'll be returning to fully
normal operations by Monday.
No mail will be lost -- all your users' posts are queued on
our mail hub. The mail will just be delayed, and may arrive
out of order.
Karen and I are probably going to be pretty unresponsive to
e-mail, because we're going to be kinda busy. Sorry about the
delays in delivery, but we'll get this fixed much faster than
UPS is getting its strike fixed. -B

down in your Cain family of a killing in Ky, & all the Cain clan packed their
wagons & moved out overnight to avoid a family fued? They came to NW AR at
that time. This story has been passed down in all the lines from there that
we have found. Good luck, Billie Floyd, Ft Smith, aR

As you know, the list received a spam from Cliff Shaw at GenForum
recently. It did some damage as detailed in the message below from Dr
Brian Leverich of Rootsweb.
Please ignore this creep and maybe he will go away. All he does is take
info from the Surname Lists and present it as his own.
-----<snip>----------------------------
As many of you are aware, GENFORUM.COM spammed all the RootsWeb lists
tonight.
It killed our mail server, and judging by the e-mail we've received
it irritated a lot of folks.
Here's what we've done at RootsWeb:
We captured and killed as much of the spam as we could, and I'm
trying to bring the mail server back on line.
I've written to Cliff Shaw to tell him we'll be sending him a bill
for damages after we clean up the wreckage, and we expect him to pay
promptly.
I've also written to all the upstream providers of his Internet
connection, asking them to share a personal growth opportunity with
him.
What a sleaze. *sigh* -B
