Notes for JAMES M. COZART:
[]
Sources of information:
tombstone: deat date
Saline County 1850 Census: children's names
Rosemary Stewart: history on the family.
James Cozart was on June 19, 1820 or 1821 in Ohio. According to the family
Bible he was born in 1820, but according to the figures on his tombstone he
was not born until 1821. I, myself, come more to believing thhe family
Bible, but others may believe what they want.
It is not know what county in Ohio he was born, nor who his parents wee. It
is also undertermined as to what year he came to Illinois. It is believed
that at the time he came to Illinois, he came by himself, and that both
parents had already died.
On August 28, 1842 he married Mary Mollie Cain. Out of this marriage four
sons and five daughters were born. However, there was one other child
mentioned in the family Bible. This child was the sixth child born to James
and Mary Cozart. According to the family Bible, this child was born June 19,
1854. This child was not named, nor was the sex of the child mentioned. I
find this confusing because this child which died in ifancy, the sixth child
born, was listed as being born one month after its sister, Martha M. Cozart.
I have been told it is possible, but very rare, for a woman to become
pregnant with one child and get pregnant with another child shortly
afterwards. I do ot know if that is what actually happened in this case or
if the year of birth was written down mistakenly.
James and Mary lived and raised their family on a three hundred acre farm in
the community of Ledford in Saline County, Illinois. Before he had made
claim to this three hundred acre farm he had built a house for him and his
family. Other people had said they were going to try to beat him to the
claims office and make claim on that land. The claims office was in
Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinos. So James left on horse back after
dark one night and rode until he arrived at the claims office in Shawneetown.
There he paid the price of twelve and a half (12 1/2) cents per acre and
claimed the three hundred acres in Ledford, Illinois.
(The land has since been stripped by the coal company.)
Sometime after James Cozart made claim on his land, he worked in the rain,
caught pneumonia and died at the age of 55.
The Cozarts were very religious people.
January 18, 1997:
While watching the news one day this past week, I seen where a woman had one
child in December and another one this month. The children were born two or
three weeks apart. So this proves that it could have happened to James and
Mary Cozart!
Children of MARY CAIN and JAMES COZART are:
6. i. JULIA ANN3 COZART, b. August 23, 1843; d. May 16, 1907.
7. ii. REBECCA JANE COZART, b. January 17, 1849, Saline County Illinois;
d. August 31, 1934, Saline County Illinois.
iii. GEORGE W. COZART, b. July 23, 185137; d. July 20, 186838.
Notes for GEORGE W. COZART:

tombstone: birth date, and death date.
Family Bible: birth date.
George W. Cozart died July 20, 1868. He is buried at Rann Cemetery located
in Harrisburg, Saline County, Illinois.
8. iv. MARTHA M. COZART, b. May 20, 1854; d. 1946.
9. v. SAMUEL ROBERT COZART, b. June 11, 1858; d. June 11, 1922.
