Message Board Post:
Robert,
Nice to meet you, cousin. Last summer, I visited the gravesites of Nancy Dutton and
Benjamin Franklin Cahoon, her son who drowned at age 17. Between their graves was a third
grave that I am certain belongs to James Cahoon, but he's not recorded on the register
and the stone is illegible. See:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=57847905 I would like to start a
fund to rehabilitate that cemetery as it is in dreadful condition and many of the stones
need repair or replacement.
Finding out who James Cahoon's parents were is my top priority right now in my
genealogical work. I hope to find some time to visit Cattaraugus County this summer or
next to work on it. I am in Iowa at present, you're in Houston?
Yes I knew that Samuel Newell and John N were twins, but I don't know John N's
middle name yet. Also Newell? I may have spotted Samuel in a group photo with John N.
recently, assuming Samuel wore glasses (see 2nd attached photo: I'm thinking the
balding man with glasses in back row 2nd from left may be Sam, John N. is on the far
right; note: 1st on left is a man with a "Cahoon" beard as is the man in the
front row far left... these could be Sam & John's older brothers?).
Do you have any pictures? I wonder if there are any pictures of James Cahoon and Nancy
Dutton still existing? We have pictures of John N's in-laws, Darius Marsh and Esther
Spencer, so it is quite possible that some exist.
Joyce Williams helped me figure out that my ancestors were Cahoons, see:

I have meanwhile been assembling an extensive tree on the early Cahoons, Calhouns and
Colquhouns, attempting to work down the tree from Willim Cahoon (b. 1635 Dumbarton,
Dumbartonshire, Scotland; d. 1675 Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts), the apparent
originator of the Cahoon name, to our James Cahoon. Here is the tree showing the
descendants of William I who lived in (Northern and Northeastern New York, mostly just
east of Utica in the towns of Cambridge and Salisbury between 1788 and 1808):

Notes:
*** Joseph Butler Cahoon (see first attached photo and note the "Cahoon beard")
is the subject of a long entry in the Illustrated Magazine of Western History. He's
the first settler to settle in Cuyahoga County (near Cleveland) and there is a Cahoon
creek named after him. I can send you the write up by e-mail if you like.
One Samuel Cahoon (1778-1820) turns up much later in Pittsburgh in 1860 and 1880, being
son of Mark (1737-1777 [note his father died before he was born]), son of William
(1704-1774)*, son of James (1673-1747), son of William I (1635-1675); so that's a
different line but this Samuel appears to be the first to venture west in that clan.
* Note: this William has conflicting birthplaces: either Massachusetts (more likely) or
Conewago, Adams, Pennsylvania, which if true, make him a candidate for ancestor of our
James, but since all his children lived and stayed in Delaware, I think this is an error,
unless there are two Williams here.
There is confusion in what's available online about Mary Auburn as she turns up
married to another brother of Ebenezer and Mary, Benjamin (1729-1790) with both dying in
Coventry, Chenango, New York, but this Benjamin otherwise never left Rhode Island and so I
think it is an error confusing Coventry, NY with Coventry, Kent, RI.
Finally, note that there is William "Cohoon" spelled with an "o" b.
1704 in Havestraw, Orange, New York in the NYC area and there are many other Cohoons in
this area.
There are a lot of lines that I have not yet traced, but this appears to be by far the
strongest line of Cahoons in the state of New York around the time our ancestor James
Cahoon was born (1798). When I have time I will chase some other lines and see if
anything comes up in Western New York. The problem is: plenty of lines have not been
traced yet. Anyway, it's a start.
Cheers,
Mike
