CARTHAGE MAN DIED IN CAR, TRUCK CRASH;
IMPACT HURLS AUTO 100 FEET, TOP SHEARED OFF
Carrier Bursts Into Flames Near Sharonville
"Oh God! I just killed a man." The stocky truck driver sobbed hysterically.
He trembled as he spoke and held his head in his hand. It had happened so quickly.
Minutes before Melvin Leo Larcon, 38, of Port Huron, Mich. had been at the wheel of a huge
auto carrier traveling south on U.S. Highway 42, north of Sharonville.
In one horrible, shattering instant a Cincinnati man lay dead in the wreckage of a new
auto and a passenger of Mr. Larcon's was injured.
The dead man was John Cahill, 59. He had left his home at 7107 Fairpark Avenue, Carthage,
earlier in the morning.
Mr. Cahill passed through Sharonville on his way to the Besuden (looks like - it's
very smeared) Nurseries in Mason, O. where he was foreman. The big yellow carrier Mr.
Larcon was driving came down the long, straight stretch of road near Sharon Woods.
"I was following a guy with Michigan license plates," Mr. Larcon told county
patrolmen Dale Fishback and William Burns. "Suddenly he stopped. He was only 15 feet
ahead of me. I had to swerve to keep from hitting him."
The carrier swerved into the side of Mr. Cahill's auto, killing him instantly. The
auto, hurled like a toy 100 feet through the air by the impact, landed on its tires. Its
entire top was sheared off.
The tractor and leading carrier overturned and caught fire. The Sycamore township fire
department put out the blaze. Two of the five new autos on the carrier were badly
damaged.
Everett Pasco, 33, of Martin, O., who was riding with Mr. Larcon, suffered a possible
right arm fracture, back and side injuries. A charge of manslaughter against Mr. Larcon
was filed with Mayor Charles Gertz, of Reading, by Patrolman Fishback.
Mr. Cahill's death was the 102d traffic fatality in Hamiton county this year, compared
with 79 deaths at this time last year.
