Cahill, Ruth Meredith
Ruth Meredith Cahill-Blowers (Paulsen) passed away suddenly on May 17th after a brief
illness. Ruth was born in and lived her entire life in Long Beach. She attended Will
Rogers Junior High School (where she was the fastest runner in the school!) and Woodrow
Wilson High School. She earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature from
Occidental College and later studied Illustration at Cal State Long Beach. Ruth loved
living in Long Beach. Most of Ruth's career was in the medical world. She was past
President of the Long Beach Medical Auxiliary and later became Executive Secretary of the
Long Beach Medical Association. She ran both the Long Beach and San Pedro offices for 22
years. She had tremendous admiration for the medical profession and loved the interactions
and relationships with the doctors she served and was well liked and known by many in the
community. Ruth lived a very active life until this brief illness. Her healthy and
youthful lifestyle was an inspirat!
ion to her family and friends. Some of the activities she enjoyed were equestrian ship,
skiing, sailing, biking, skating and tennis. She was an avid walker until very recently.
She also enjoyed an active social life with family and friends. Favorite activities
included the Civic Light Opera, summer concerts in the park, the Hollywood bowl, the Yacht
Club, flower/garden shows and meals out with family and friends. She traveled regularly
with her husband Bob. They took weekend trips to Ventura and Laguna Beach as well as their
beloved yearly trips to Napa and Hawaii. Just this past year they took the trip of a
lifetime, an Atlantic cruise to Northern Europe. Every year, on Memorial Day, Ruth and Bob
would visit the graves of loved ones. Ruth had a deep love and reverence for her mother,
father and the past. Ruth was also very concerned about her community and world. She was a
member of the Assistance League and Soroptimist. She donated a large sum to keep LB
Community Hospita!
l open and regularly gave to various health, children's, educational,
humane, environmental, social and historical groups. She was also very active in politics
and enjoyed the excitement of elections. Immediately before her death, she was campaigning
for the elections coming up in June. Ruth's 25-year marriage to Dr. Eugene E. Cahill
produced her five daughters. She will be missed for many reasons including her great sense
of humor and zest for life. Her daughters are Carrie Cahill Asher, Julie Cahill Caine
(Rick), Marianne Cahill Morris (Ron), Cathy Cahill-Wilson (Greg) and Kristina Cahill. She
was the daughter of Ruth and Henry Paulsen of Long Beach. She left behind her
grandchildren Carly Asher, Michelle and Jack Caine, Erin and Elizabeth Morris, Mathew and
Sam Wilson. Ruth is also survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Robert Blowers, who
will miss her dearly. A Memorial Service will be held at Bay Shore Community
Congregational Church on Friday, June 2, 2006 at 11:00.
