I have found a Margaret Cahill in the 1870 Hartford, CT census where she was working as a
servant for the Pease family. This Margaret is the right age - about 16.
I also found an entry for a William Cahill that arrived on the ship Manhattan into New
York on May 24, 1867. The age of this William Cahill is 20, so date of birth to be 1847
or so - pretty close. But, I only saw William Cahill listed - no brothers (if the lore is
correct I expect to see other males around the same age).
Of course, the problem is that William, Margaret (and Patrick) Cahill are all common
names. Also, the education level in Ireland was very low at the time so written documents
are few and far between. It took me a long while to separate the Oakland Cahills from the
San Francisco Cahills, for instance.
Thanks for the information on Salisbury. I'll write them to see if they have a record
of the birth of Mary Ann and/or the marriage of William and Margaret. I wish I were
closer to personally visit.
Let me know if you need any information from me.
Best,
Bill
