My Patrick, my ggrandfather, had 7 kids (1900 and 1910 Census say she had 9 kids 7 living)
- Anna (abt. 1872-1925), William F. (1874-1945), John P.(1877-?),Margaret (1879-?),
daughter b. and d. May 1880, Catherine E. (1881-abt. 1959), Walter (my grandfather
-1883-1962), Lucy M. (1885-1967) and they adopted a niece, Mary Snyder (b. abt. 1892 -
d.1977). When I went to the cemetery where Pat is said to be buried (couldn't verify
as many stones overturned) we did find the grave of Mary's mother, Mary, daughter of
John so he might be another brother. Pat's 1st son was William and the 2nd John - may
mean something.
I tried to find Pat's exact death thru the Town Clerk in Salisbury. Sent a letter
with $10 check as per website - they investigated and were unable to find him, returned
the check with their response. I was impressed. I have also been to the Town Clerk's
office in Salisbury where they allow you to look in the original records yourself! I hope
to go again later in the Spring (it's a 5 hr. drive).
I got in touch with the Diocese of Hartford to try and find out where the records for the
above cemetery are maintained. They referred me St. Joseph's Church in Canaan. I
emailed them and they said the cemetery is closed for the winter. She would give my email
to the sexton and he would check in the spring. I appreciate their efforts but am stymied
as there is no building at this cemetery - just graves. In fact, you have to drive
between 2 houses on a dirt path to get to it!
I have searched for Immigration records - many Patrick Cahills so haven't narrowed it
down. Don't know the county he was from altho' my mother always said there were
many people from Tipperary buried near his grave so she felt he was from there - again,
not proven. I have Pat and family in 1880 Census and then just Ann and kids in 1900 in
Torrington.
Don't know if any of this helps to bring both of us closer to finding out the info. I
would try the Town Clerk in Salisbury to get Mary Ann's birth record. Do you have
William's or Margaret's death certificate?
I was just re-reading my notes (I'm not as organized as I should be!) and found a
notation "possible brother William, b. 1847-8, arrived 17 Jan. 1859 on the ship
Manhattan into NYC. I'll need to go back and look into this.
Lynn
