Hi,
I am trying to find out more about my great-great grandfather Michael Cahill who was born
in Castlemartyr Co. Cork about 1840 and came to England some time between the aftermath of
the potato famine in 1845, and 1860.
The first records I have found are his RN records from 1860-1873 where he was a stoker. He
married Jane Bateman in an RC church in Portsea Island (Portsmouth) in 1861 and had at
least 3 children Charles Lawrence Cahill, John Cahill and Thomas Cahill. They stayed in
Portsmouth until Michael's death in 1881 aged only 40.
I have Michaels marriage certificate which shows his father's name was Lawrence Cahill
who's occupation was 'Farmer' as indeed was Jane Bateman's father Charles.
Jane's family appear to be from Clonakilty, Cork. Her mother's name was Ann
Bateman but I have no idea of her maiden name.
There are no Irish records on Ancestry.co.uk for this family from Co.Cork and I would love
to hear from anyone who can tell me any more about them or may also be related to them.
The only confirmation I have of Michael's birth place being Castlemartyr is from his
Royal Naval records.
Helen Heaven
