In reference to the Cohill v. Cahill spelling. I think that has to do with accents. I know my family line which remained in SW Virginia until my father died, pronounced the name "Cau-Heel". They also clamed to be Scotch-Irish wich would explain the pronunciation. Most Cahills I've researched were Irish "Cay-hill"s and were Catholic. The Virginia line was Baptist. I've seen the original signature of my John Cahill and it is written Cohill. Though his childlen all write Cahill.

They are definitely two different John Cahills mine was born abt. 1760 (I wrote in incorrecly in my other posting..I must have been tired.) He also stayed married to Diana Garner until his death in 1817. I think the two are cousins. If yours was named William John and called John they could have been brothers...but I think that's stretching it.
Your John Cahill is probably the son of William Perry Cahill and Elizabeth Norris of Hartford County Md. Their daughter Elizabeth Cahill married John Butts (Eleanor's brother) on 3/20/1800 in Culpeper County, VA. It was very common for siblings to marry other siblings. To add that John William Cahill's first son was Perry. First son's are usually named after their paternal grandfather.
I lot of my research is packed up. We just moved. As soon as I find more I'll let you know.
Cathy
