Hello List,
In reference to Isham & James H.Cagle, a reference was made by me
concerning them. At least I assume it is them as the names are the same as
is the CSA Co.
A notice was run in the 30 January 1863 edition of The Chattanooga Rebel by
a Joseph Marr, Capt. Comanding Co. H, 3rd. Reg't Tenn. Vols. In effect he
is offering a $30.00 reward for deserters from this company. There were
among several other men these Cagle's :
Isam Cagle, William Cagle, James H. Cagle. The article dosen't say what
date they deserted his comand. Thought this might add an interesting side
bar to Lee Cagle's, posting about them.
Earl

Ashley,
You may add these notes to yours for James H Cagle whose military service
in the CSA pretty much parrallels that
of his fathers. I suggest "cut & paste".

James was enlisted on Apr 26, 1861 as a PVT in Co H, 3d Mtd Infantry,
(Lillard's), 3d Reg't TN Vols, CSA at Sweetwater, TN by Capt J C Boyd for
a period of 12 months which is exactly the same as for his father Isham.
Some of the muster rolls are missing, but he is shown as present for duty
on the unit muster rolls for Sep and Oct 1861 which also, indicate he was
paid to Sept 1, 1861 by D G Spurier. The muster roll was signed by T R
Owens.
Muster rolls for Co H, 3d Mtd Inf indicate James was present for duty for
the months of Nov and Dec 1861 and had reenlisted for two years.
He had also, been paid through 31 Oct 1862 by H M D McElrath. The muster
roll was signed by T R Owens. (the "paid thru date" should
probably be 31 Oct 1861. This is identical to his father's record of
reenlistment.
The next muster in the files are for Jan and Feb 1862 indicating he was
present for duty and paid to Dec 31, 1961 by H M D McElrath. This
muster was again signed by T R Owens. Another muster roll in the unit
files indicate James was present for duty in May and Jun 1863 and
was paid thru Apr 30, 1863. This muster was also, signed by T R Owens.
James next appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War paroled at Vicksburg,
MS according to the terns of capitulation entered into by the commanding
Generals of the United States and Confederate forces on July 4, 1863. He
was captured at Vicksburg, MS on 4 July 1863.
The muster roll was signed by M Gallade. These are the same dates as his
father and others which would indicate the entire unit
"capitulated".
"Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 10th, 1863.
"To all whom it may concern, Know ye that:
"I James H Cagle a Private of Co H, 3d Reg't Tennessee Vols, CSA, Being a
prisoner of War, in the hands of the United States Forces, in virtue of
the capitulation of the City of Vicksburg and its Garrison, by Lieut Gen
John C Pembarton, CSA, Commanding, on the 4th day of
July, 1863, do in pursuance of the terms of said capitulation, give this
my solemn parole under oath...That I will not take up arms again against
the United States, nor serve in any military police or constabulary force
in any Fort, Garrison or field work, held by the Confederate
States of America, against the United States of Amnerica, nor as guard of
prisons, depots or stores, nor discharge any duties usually performed by
Officers or soldiers, against the United States of America, until duly
exchanged by the proper authorities.
/s/ James H Cagle, Private, Co H, 3d Tenn Vol.
"Sworn to and sugbscribed before me at Vicksburg, Miss, this 10th day of
July, 1863. /s/ P A Pullen, 20th Reg'g Illinois Vols, Capt, and
Paroling Officer.
James was present for duty and appears on the next muster rolls for July
and Aug 1863 where it indicates he was last paid to Jun 30, 1863 by Capt
Allen. This muster was signed by T R Owens. The following muster for
Sept to Dec 31, 1863 indicates he was last paid to Jun 30,
1863 by Capt Allen. The remarks section of this muster reads: "Gone to
the Union". This muster roll was signed by T R Owens.
He next appears on a "List of Rebel Deserters who have voluntarily taken
and subscribed the oath of allegiance to the United States
Government at Knoxville, Tenn., between Dec 4 and 16, 1863, and
confinement for a limited period have been permitted to go to their homes
when the same were situated within our lines, and in other cases were
sent to Kentucky, to be there released. List dated Office of
the Provost Marshal Genl of East Tenn., Knoxville, Tenn, Cec 16, 1863.
Residence: Civil District 12, County: Monroe, State: Tenn;
Final disposition: Released here. Sheet 7. /s/ L E Fehts."
A Pvt J. H. Cagle appears on a second "List of Rebel deserters" of the
39th Tenn Infantry who were released on Feb 27, 1964; however,
the muster card was apparently, misfiled in James H Cagle's papers.
