Eddie covered this well - let me add this bit. Charles H. Cagle of Louisville MS was the
brother to Jacob W. Cagle of Greenville SC. Charles was the maternal grandfather of Hilda
Scarborough and O.B. was the son of Jacob W.
The Scarboroughs had moved from Louisville to Poplar ville (Pearl Co.) MS in 1879 where
James J. Scarborough founded the first bank and later opened the first insurance agency in
the town.
Osborne Barry Cagle was a graduate of M.I.T. in architecture. His father, Jacob, was a
builder of industrial plants and apparently O.B. worked for him. While en-route to S.
America to build a plant, O.B. became seriously ill and had to be taken off the train in
New Orleans (or Poplar ville depending on who tells the story). O.B. was unconscious but
his man servant checked him into a hotel and a doctor was called. The doctor recognized
the name Cagle and asked if he was related to the Scarboroughs. The servant did not know
but the doctor contacted Jacob in Greenville and learned they were indeed related. The
Scarboroughs moved O.B. into their home and he stayed there until he recovered. His father
came to take him home but by then O.B. and Hilda had fallen in love and decided to marry.
The family story is (I have never checked this out) that MS did not allow marriages
between first cousins (once removed) so they married in LA in March 1903. I have never
found a record so do n!
ot know
if they married in MS or LA.
Dana
This would be Osborne Barry Cagle (1871-1954), and his cousin wife Hilda
Aileen Scarborough (1885-1961) Osborne was a son of Jacob W. Cagle
(1832-1910). Hilda was the daughter of James and Virginia Cagle Scarborough.
They are part of the Leonard and Mary Osborne Cagle family of western North Carolina.
My Nancy Cagle Cox was the sister of Jacob W. and daughter of Leonard
and Mary
Cagle.
There is an interesting story behind Osborne and Hilda's marriage
but I'm not sure of all the details. Dana Meara, another member of the list and a
cousin of the same line may have more information than I. But if any are interested I
can provide the basic story.
