Jimmie,
My g/g/g/grandfather, Charles T. Polk, 1780-1839, lived in the same
neighborhood with Capt. Charles T. Polk in Mecklenburg Co., NC. However,
Capt. Charles had a son named Charley Polk who lived and died in NC. Capt.
Charles did have a son, William Polk, 1786-1843, who was a next door
neighbor of my Charles T. Polk here in Hardin Co., TN. Capt. Charles also
had a daughter, Deborah who married Gideon Freeman and also came to Hardin
Co.
I have not been able to put a handle on the parents of my Charles T. Polk.
My best guess at this moment is that he may be an illegitimate son of Capt.
Charles. Capt. Charles Polk was married twice and my Charles T. Polk was
born in the period between the two wives.
My Cagle ancestors lived in the same neighborhood as the Polks in NC. They
lived in that part of Mecklenburg that became Cabarrus Co. in 1793. that
line runs:
Leonard (the immigrant form Germany1732)
David, 1728-ca 1793
Henry, ca 1760- ca 1837
Henry Jr. 1780-1857
John 1813-1879
Charles T. 1844-1930
Lloyd Hasson 1880-1970
My dad is still living at age 94
Then me, David Cagle 1940-
Henry Cagle Jr. arrived in Hardin Co., TN in 1829, Henry Sr. arrived in
1832. My line never got to Alabama.
Two other Cagles arrived in Hardin County about the same time as Henry Sr.,
above. These Cagles were Henry and his son James who both appear on the
1833 Tax list of Hardin County. Henry and James do not remain long in
Hardin Co. and move to DeKalb Co., AL where Henry appears in the Census
there. Henry and James both appear in the 1850 census of Hancock Co., AL,
then in Winston Co. Henry is a son of Valentine Cagle who died in Warren
Co., TN ca 1815.
David

The incident in this article is very sad and gives insight to
promblems
that we today can't imagine.
In the article, I noticed mention of Charles Polk who died in 1839. Do
you know if he was Captain Charles Polk of Mecklenburg County, North
Carolina who led a company of men during the Revolutionary War? I'm
interested because my ancestor "John Purser" served under him. According
to Mecklenburg census records, John lived in the same neighborhood as the
Polk family.
Another interesting thing is that John Purser's son, Richard Purser, moved
to Henry County, GA before 1830. Richard's daughter, Elvy, married Elijah
Walker Ford. Elijah's parents were Daniel and Agatha Walker Ford. Daniel
and Agatha had a daughter named Aley who married Robert Cagle on 24 Jul
1834 in Henry County, GA. Robert and Aley Cagle named one of their sons
"James Knox Polk Cagle" and their youngest son was named David Daniel
Cagle. David was born January 1854 and died 27 Apr 1951 in Fulton County,
GA. I think the Cagles had moved down to Georgia from North Carolina.
David Cagle was very interested in researching and in the 1930's he wrote
two letters about his Ford family which mentions my ancestor Elijah Walker
Ford who moved from Henry County, GA to Marion County, AL.
Since your name is also David Cagle, thought you might be interested in
this.
My ancestors who lived in Hardin County were David Brumley, my
g'g'grandfather and also James Wesley Scott who was a son of my ancestor
Peter Martin Scott of Marion County, AL.

Jimmie Nell Meadors
