We are attempting to locate any descendents of our great-grandfather’s two brothers John
(or Johnnie) and Alonzo Williams. The story handed down from our parents and grandparents
is that Emmit (or Emit or Emmitt) and his brother Alonzo set off from Stone Mountain
Georgia in the late 1870’s for Texas. The story has it that Emmit got as far as the
Tyro/Harmontown area in Lafayette County, MS where he met and fell in love with his
wife-to-be and that Alonzo went on to Texas.
We know that Emit Reynolds Williams (1853-1917) married Sarah Frances “Fannie” Rayborn
(1858-1921) in 1878 and that the couple had seven children who are listed below. We are
not sure but we have been told that Emit’s father was John Williams.
The 1870 Census for Jackson County Georgia list a household consisting of Allen Colman age
85 born in SC, Ann Coleman age 85 born in SC, Mary Williams age 40 born in SC, Emmit
Williams age 15 born in GA, Alonzo Williams age 14 born in GA and John Williams age 10
born in GA.
The 1880 Census for Lafayette County Mississippi list a household consisting of Emit
Williams Age 26 born in GA, wife Fannie Williams age 21 born in MS, brother Johnnie
Williams age 18 born in GA and Columbus Williams age six months born in MS but no mention
of Alonzo.
In 1937 when he was age 10 John Cully Williams, a grandson of Emit Reynolds, traveled with
his father John Thurber and his uncle Christopher Columbus to visit an “Uncle John and
Aunt Annie” in Gainesville GA. John Cully now age 78 remembers Uncle John as being an “old
man”, he also recalls that he spoke to him years later by phone, maybe in the 1970s or
80s.
Emit Reynolds Williams (1853-1917) married (Nov 7, 1878) Sarah Frances Rayborn (1858-1921)
and had the following Children:
Christopher Columbus Williams (1880-1955)
Pearl Williams (1881- ??)
John Thurber Williams (1883-1952)family
Maggie Williams (1888-1896)
Lillian Mae Williams (1890-1972)
Willie Lester "L.W." Williams (1892-1958)
Alonzo Allen "Lonnie" Williams (1896-1956)
Does any of this connect with anything in your Williams family?
Best Regards,
John Williams
