On 1 Feb 1895, William Cagle at Charleston, Bradley County, TN, initiated the following
deposition to special examiner of the Pension Office, J S. Smith: "I am 54 yrs old,
have no occupation, formerly a farmer, residence and postal address Calhoun, McMinn Co.,
TN. I am the son of Isom Cagle and Mary A Cagle. I was born in Sevier Co., TN. I was a
private in Co K, 12th Tenn Cav. Father was in the same company and we enlisted at the
same time at Madisonville, Monroe County, TN and served together from enlistment up to
time of the Hood fight near Columbia, Tenn, at which time father was reported killed and I
have not seen or heard of him since. I was not present at time spoken of. (Apparently,
his wedding to Paralee Amick Brown.) I cannot tell you the dates of my enlistment and
discharge and cannot tell the date of fight near Columbia, Tenn when Father was reported
killed. We were together from enlistment up to the fight with Hood at Nashville,Tenn. I
was left sick at t!
hat place and Father went on with the Regt and in the raid after Hood and as before
stated in a fight near Columbia, Tenn, he was reported killed. It was several days after
I saw him the last time, when I heard of him being killed. A comrade named William
Ferguson told me that he saw Father fall in that fight, did not say he was killed or that
he saw where he was shot, just said he saw him fall; told me this after the man there was
another man who said he saw Father go into that fight and never saw him afterwards, but I
can't think of his name. After hearing you read the names off the list, I could not
say who, if any of those were near my father before the man or whether any of them could
tell you anything about him or what because of him. There was a James Cagle in the
company who was with the command all the time, he might know something about Father.
James Cagle was from Monroe Co., TN., but not related to us and I think he now lives in
Indiana. After the Nashvill!
e fight our Regt went out west and did duty on the plains until muster
ed out and I know my father was not with us after the time spoken of. There was a man in
the company named Isom Andrew Cagle and he deserted us in Middle Tennessee somewhere and I
never knew anything further of him, dont know where he was from. My father was the only
Isom Cagle in the company. I never heard of him being charged with desertion. I supposed
he was killed near Columbia and have always since then thought he was dead, had no reason
to think otherwise. I never knew a Henry D Chagle. Father was some fifty years old,
black hair and beard, considerably gray, about 5 ft, 8 inches high, black eyes and dark
complexion and rather heavy set build and would weigh perhaps 155 lbs. Was a lively,
jolly kind of a man."/s/ William X Cagle (his mark).
