William Cagle, the oldest son of Henry Cagle, Sr was born in NC in the
1750s, and died after 1850 in Sevier Co., TN, where the census of 1850 lists
his age as 96 yrs of age. William was married to Mary Barrett in Moore Co.,
NC in 1787, with William Cockman as bondsman. By the time of the 1790
census, William and wife show two children in their household, and were
enumerated near William's father, Henry Sr, and brother, Christian Cagle:
1790 Moore Co., NC:
Cagle, Henry Sr 3-4-4 (3males over 16, 3 males under 16, and 4
females.
Cagle, William 1-1-2 (1 Male over 16, 1 male under 16, and 2 females.
Cagle, Christian 1-1-1 (1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, and 1
female.
In 1791, William Cagle served as a chain carrier for the 100 acre land entry
of Christopher Cagle on Bear Creek; and, in 1792, served as a chain carrier
for the 100 acre entry of his father, Henry Sr., also on Bear Creek. Then,
in 1794, 1795 and 1800, William himself had his three land entries of 100,
50, and 75 acres on the South prong of Bear Creek. The entry of 1794
adjoined the 1792 entry of Henry Sr, his father, on the South prong of Bear
Creek, near its fork with the North prong; note that both William and Henry
Sr joined the lands of Michael Hart. William's entries of 1795 and 1800,
according to their surveys joined his entry of 1794. The three tracts
totaled some 225 acres. His entry of 1775 lay on the West of the old Yadkin
Road, which ran through the NW part of Moore County from NW to SE.
By 1815, the next surviving Tax List of Moore Co., William was not listed as
a land owner; rather, had moved to nearby Randolph Co., and had 250 acres on
Little River. William was between 40-45 yrs of age in 1800, and by 1808 had
begun to appear in records of Blount Co., TN.

1820 Randolph Co., NC was Destroyed . Then, returned to TN where he
entered land per No. 403, 13 Jan 1826 amounting to 50 acres more orl ess. A
description appears in the records of Sevier County. The survey was
completed and the grant # 13162 approved on 16 March 1826. Chain Carriers
were Elijah Cagle and William Shamlin. Survey was conducted by Deputy
Surveyor, Guilford Carman. This same land was later sold by George Calaway
Cagle
per deed book returns after the fire, pg 347 recorded 24th November 1874.
By the 1830 US Fed Census William Sr, Henry, William Jr., and John were all
listed in Sevier County. The US Federal Census of 1840 has the same sons
plus George. Also, recorded in Sevier County in 1840 were two of William's
grandsons, Isom Andrew and William III. Source: Cagle Journal, page

Note: William C Cagle is living at household 842 while son, George is
living at household 844 on the same page. Living between them is the family
of Richard Ragan and wife Phebea who is of an age to be the unknown daughter
b. 1790-1794 of William Sr Cagle. This is not enough to assume it is,
but needs more research. They both appear to be from Virginia according to
the Census.
Family lore passed down is William Sr died when a horse threw him at the
age of 104 and that both he and Mary were centurians. Both, William and
Mary died sometime after 1850. The exact date has not been determined.
They lived on the border of Blount County, TN; the Ella Joy Cemetery was the
only cemetery for miles around. Thus, it is thought they are buried there
in unmarked graves or on their homesite of 1826
