Dear List,While doing some Civil War research i got a nice surprise. My g-grandfather
Thomas W. Cagle, served in the Civil War.He applied for a pension from Charleston, Mo.
There is a database on Heritage Quest for Missouri Civil War pensionapplications. When he
applied he was already in his early seventies in 1915. He had an injury that kept him from
working. There was a reference to an injury in the 1880 Oregon Co; Mo; census. The first
appearance for him and Mary Elvira Cagle. He served in the Arkansas Volunteers Company E
Captain Beshoor 31st. Regiment Infantry under Colonel Shaver. He served from 1862-1865 and
it says he was captured at Mound City, Ar; five miles above Memphis, Tn.
According to the report he was captured and released on the same day 25 May 1865. It says
the war had ended and so hewas released. I had no idea he had served in the Civil War. I
had never found records with reference to his service. From what i understand the men were
paid between $50 & $100 a month. Does anyone on the list know when pensions fromthe
Civil War started? It says he didn't get a discharge so he had to prove his service
and he had someone from Charleston, Mo;give reference for him in a letter to the Adjutant
General's Office in Washington DC.In one war record he was listed as T.J. Cagle.
However, he was found in other records as T.W.Cagle, from Charleston, Mo.Take Care,Earl D.
