Ancestors of William Cagle
Generation No. 1
1. William Cagle, born 1803 in Moore County, North Carolina, United
States of America; died 07 Mar 1864 in Louisville, KY Civil War Casualty.
He was the son of 2. Henry Cagle and 3. Elizabeth Hill. He married (1)
Mary
Phereby Rogers 29 Dec 1831 in Blount Co., TN. She was born 1810 in
Bradley
County, Tennessee, United States of America, and died May 1904 in Blount
County, Tennessee, United States of America.
Notes for William Cagle:

Andrew 19 TN
Henry 17 TN
Elvira 9
Rufus 8
Sarah 6 TN
Apparantly, the two daughters reflected in the 1840 Census of Sevier Co.,
TN
had married by the time of the above census. Their names are not known at
this time. I suspect Elvira might be one of them and only one is unknown.
Sevier County Circuit Court Minutes of 1850-1861 reflect on March 29,

Cagle, John MW 1TN
Died of complications from wounds incurred in the Autumn of 1863. He
enlisted 20 Sep 1862 at Charleston, TN for three years or duration as a
PVT
in Company A, 62d Tennessee Mounted Infantry, in the place of another man,
R. C. Bates who hired William to take his place. Such practice was common
during the war. The destitute financial situation of William; no assets
listed in 1860 census; may have prompted the action on William's part.
William was reported AWOL in March and April 1863, but probably returned
home to plant a crop which was also, common during the war. He then,
returned to his unit in mid 1863; this too, was a common practice. His
widow was paid a pension by 1866. Source, John G. Cagle, Historian Cagles
