Lamona,
Henry Cagle Jr was born in the early 1770s. He married Elizabeth Hill (1773-1850s) during
the 1790s, and first began to appear in the records of Moore about 1795, as a road hand,
assigned to help maintain the public roads in the NW corner of Moore County. He and
Elizabeth had 7 children between 1797 and 1809, all born in the Bear Creek area of Moore
Co., NC.
He appeared as a head of household in the census records of 1800 as Henry Cagle, Jr., as
a young married man with 4 children, one son and three daughters. By 1810, Henry's
family had increased to 10 children (5 sons)
1800 Moore County, NC: Cagle, Henry Jr. 103-301
1810 Moore County, NC: Cagle, Henry 3111-3201
1820 Moore County, NC: Cagle, Henry 021201-42001
1830 Moore County, NC: Cagle, Henry 00001001-01223001
In 1830, above, Henry's daughters were still at home, but only one of his sons
remained unmarried; this was probably Martin C Cagle who moved to Montgomery County during
the 1830s, and later had land grants there (1836, 1839, and 1852).
On the Moore County Tax List of 1815, the only surviving tax list of the era, Henry Jr is
shown to have owned 7 tracts of land, totalling some 550 acres, and valued at a combined
$510. Additionally, he is known to have owned 300 acres across the county line in
Montgomery County which he conveyed to Martin C Cagle and in 1836 Martin C began to add
to his holdings by acquiring state grants of land.
In the 1830 census, Henry's older sons were situated as follows: (1) Elisha, in
Randolph Co., NC; (2) Jonathan, in Moore Co., NC; (3) William, in Montgomery Co., NC.
Later census records would indicate these sons remained permanently in these counties.
During the 1820s and following, Henry Cagle Jr appears a number of times in Moore Co court
records, usually as a juror or as a road hand. However, with his advancing age he is no
longer referred to as Jr, but is sometimes called Henry Sr to distinguish him from his son
and/or nephew by that name. Henry Cagle is not found in the census of 1840, which has led
to the general opinion that he died in the 1830s. However, it is also possible that he
was missed by the census taker and lived into the 1840s.
The Moore County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions records the settlement of his estate
in its session of Jan 28, 1845; this might suggest that he died in the 1840s, maybe about
1844. John Cagle eventually moved to Clay Co., IN in 1830, while Henry Jr remained
permanently in Moore Co., NC.
Henry Cagle Jr 1770s-1830s, son of Henry Sr who died in 1802, received five land grants
from the State of NC; his entries were made in 1795, 1797, 1798, 1802, and 1821. All lay
on the waters of Bear Creek in NW Moore.
Henry Cagle Jr remained permanently in Moore Co., though several of his brother moved
away, either to neighboring Montgomery Co or out of state. Henry Jr acquired large land
holdings, centered in extreme NW Moore, in the area between the North and South prongs of
Bear Creek. He was situated very close to both the Randolph and Montgomery County lines,
and his oldest son Elisha, b. 1795, eventually settled in Randolph, and his two youngest
sons, William & Martin C. made their homes in Montgomery. However, not much distance
separated this family group, despite their residence in three different counties. Henry
Jr eventually became the largest of the Cagle landowners in Moore Co; and his son William,
1805-1866, became the largest of the Cagle landowners in Montgomery County.

R. C. Bates who hired William to take his place. Such practice was common
during the war. The destitute financial situation of William; no assets

William was reported AWOL in March and April 1863, but probably returned
