CARTERVILLE - Jack Dean Hampton, 85, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in Memorial
Hospital of Carbondale.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in
Carterville, with the Rev. Mel Bower Jr. and Pastor Jeff Wiggs officiating. Burial will be
in Willowrest Cemetery in Carterville with military honors conducted by Marion V.F.W
Hyde-Pillow Post 1301. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the
funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Hampton Cemetery Fund, sent in care of Hampton Baptist
Church, P.O. Box 1, Carterville, IL 62918. Envelopes will be available at the funeral
home.
Jack was born July 13, 1923, in the Hampton settlement in Carterville Township to James
Timothy and Sarah Elizabeth (Halstead) Hampton. He married Robbye Joanna Busch on Jan. 3,
1947, in Hernando, Miss.
He is survived by his wife, Robbye Joanna Hampton of Carterville; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Dennis and Dana Hampton of Salem and David and Barbara Hampton of
Carterville; three grandchildren, Shawn Hampton and his wife, Marcee, of Tolono, Amanda
Hampton of Indianapolis, and Rebecca Hampton of Chicago; three great-grandchildren,
Kaylin, Jaeden, and Grayson Hampton, all of Tolono; two brothers and sisters-in-law,
Berkley Hampton and his wife, Mae, of Johnson City, Tenn., and William Hampton and wife,
Shirley, of Calif.; sister, Wanda Mae Poole of Carterville; and brother-in-law and
sister-in-law, Daryle Busch and wife, Jeri of Lawrence, Kan.; and many nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kathryn Hampton; and
brother-in-law, Herschel "Pete" Poole.
He honorably served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper with
the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion. Jack served overseas in Africa, Italy and France.
He was wounded in Anzio, Italy, and was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
He was a member of the 509 Parachute Infantry Association, "America's First
Combat Paratroopers", member of the Disabled American Veterans in Marion, a former
member of the Carterville American Legion, a member of the Carterville Boat & Yacht
Club and attended First Presbyterian Church in Carterville.
Jack was a former Williamson County Commissioner and served as a Republican Precinct
Committee member. He also served on the Franklin-Williamson County Human Services Board
and the Greater Egypt Regional Planning Committee.
Jack worked for the Illinois Central Railroad as a switchman from 1951 until his
retirement in 1983. He also worked as a farmer, who raised livestock and grew crops.
He was an avid fisherman who liked taking trips to Canada with his wife, where they
enjoyed musky fishing. In recent years, he enjoyed his rose garden at the corner of
Missouri and Brown.
