Thanks, Nancy Jane
I believe the Jacob Hagler who married Elizabeth Cagle was the same Jacob
Hagler who was the chain carrier at old David Cagle's entry in 1779. I have
studied the Hagler family of Mecklenburg Co., NC extensively. I have not
found any evidence that there was an older Jacob Hagler. The oldest Jacob
Hagler of Mecklenburg Co., NC lived on Dutch Buffalo Creek and was the son
of the John Hagler who got land on Dutch Buffalo Creek in 1765.
By 21 August 1797, this Jacob Hagler was living in Montgomery Co., NC where
he was named as a neighbor in Andrew Smith's warrant for 100 acres on the
South side of the Yadkin River on a branch of Bear Creek in Montgomery Co.,
NC. (Dr. A. B. Pruitt, compiler, Land Warrants & Surveys, Montgomery
County, North Carolina, 1778 - 1833, 2 volumes (Whitakers, North Carolina:
A. B. Pruitt, 2006), p. 138).
Elizabeth Cagle must have been Jacob Hagler's second wife. Her date of
birth is given as 4 January 1789. Jacob Hagler is in the 1790 US Census for
Mecklenburg Co., NC with nine persons in his household. Presumably one of
those persons was his wife and seven of those persons were his children.
Elizabeth Cagle would only have been a year old at this time.
I have a copy of the census showing Jacob Hagler and his family were in
Walton Co., GA in 1820 and the letter showing Jacob Hagler and his wife were
in Henry Co., GA in 1826 living near his wife's brother David Cagle. The
Jacob Hagler in the 1830 US Census for Henry Co., GA seems to be the same
Jacob Hagler, since there are Cagles living nearby.
On 17 January 1837, a Jacob Hagler married a Kizziah Thomas in Fayette, Co.,
GA.
This is probably the same Jacob Hagler (60-70) & wife (40-50) in the 1840 US
Census for Cobb Co., GA.
This is probably the same Jacob Hegar (85) & wife Keziah (45) in the 1850 US
Census for Murray Co., GA.
This is probably the same Jacob Hagler (92) & wife Keziah (57) in the 1860
US Census for Gordon Co., GA.
This looks to me like the Jacob Hagler who married Elizabeth Cagle died
between 1830 and 1840. Does anyone have any documentation for this?
I have seen claims that Elizabeth Cagle Hagler died in 1867 in Georgia.
Does anyone have any documentation for this bit of information? Is it in
one of John G. Cagle's books?
